Consisting of 18 books, the Mahabharata details the history and legends concerning ancient India (Bharata), including a major battle campaign involving the Kauravas and the Pandavas, also known as the Kurukshetra War. तत्रापराणि दारूणि संसृज्यन्ते ततस्ततः ।
तृणकाष्ठकरीषाणि कदा चिन्नसमीक्षया ।
एवमेवायमाचारः प्रादुर्भूतो यतस्ततः ॥ २४ ॥

tatrāparāṇi dārūṇi saṃsṛjyante tatastataḥ |
tṛṇakāṣṭhakarīṣāṇi kadā cinnasamīkṣayā |
