Consisting of 18 books, the Mahabharata details the history and legends concerning ancient India (Bharata), including a major battle campaign involving the Kauravas and the Pandavas, also known as the Kurukshetra War. This portion also contains the Bhagavad-Gita. Alternative titles: Mahābhārata (महाभारत).

जापकानां फलावाप्तिं श्रोतुमिच्छामि भारत ।
किं फलं जपतामुक्तं क्व वा तिष्ठन्ति जापकाः ॥ ३ ॥

jāpakānāṃ phalāvāptiṃ śrotumicchāmi bhārata |
kiṃ phalaṃ japatāmuktaṃ kva vā tiṣṭhanti jāpakāḥ || 3 ||
