Consisting of 18 books, the Mahabharata details the history and legends concerning ancient India (Bharata), including a major battle campaign involving the Kauravas and the Pandavas, also known as the Kurukshetra War. This portion also contains the Bhagavad-Gita. Alternative titles: Mahābhārata (महाभारत).

स चेन्ममार सृञ्जय चतुर्भद्रतरस्त्वया ।
पुत्रात्पुण्यतरश्चैव मा पुत्रमनुतप्यथाः ।
अदक्षिणमयज्वानं तं वै संशाम्य मा शुचः ॥ ३९ ॥

sa cenmamāra sṛñjaya caturbhadratarastvayā |
putrātpuṇyataraścaiva mā putramanutapyathāḥ |
adakṣiṇamayajvānaṃ taṃ vai saṃśāmya mā śucaḥ || 39 ||
