Consisting of 18 books, the Mahabharata details the history and legends concerning ancient India (Bharata), including a major battle campaign involving the Kauravas and the Pandavas, also known as the Kurukshetra War. अर्जुन उवाच ।
अत्रैवोदाहरन्तीममितिहासं पुरातनम् ।
तापसैः सह संवादं शक्रस्य भरतर्षभ ॥ १ ॥

atraivodāharantīmamitihāsaṃ purātanam |
tāpasaiḥ saha saṃvādaṃ śakrasya bharatarṣabha || 1 ||
