Consisting of 18 books, the Mahabharata details the history and legends concerning ancient India (Bharata), including a major battle campaign involving the Kauravas and the Pandavas, also known as the Kurukshetra War. मया निसृष्टं पापं हि परिग्रहमभीप्सता ।
जन्मक्षयनिमित्तं च शक्यं प्राप्तुमिति श्रुतिः ॥ ३८ ॥

mayā nisṛṣṭaṃ pāpaṃ hi parigrahamabhīpsatā |
janmakṣayanimittaṃ ca śakyaṃ prāptumiti śrutiḥ || 38 ||
