Consisting of 18 books, the Mahabharata details the history and legends concerning ancient India (Bharata), including a major battle campaign involving the Kauravas and the Pandavas, also known as the Kurukshetra War. तपोर्थीयं ब्राह्मणी धत्त गर्भं गौर्वोढारं धावितारं तुरंगी ।
शूद्रा दासं पशुपालं तु वैश्या वधार्थीयं त्वद्विधा राजपुत्री ॥ ५ ॥

taporthīyaṃ brāhmaṇī dhatta garbhaṃ gaurvoḍhāraṃ dhāvitāraṃ turaṃgī |
śūdrā dāsaṃ paśupālaṃ tu vaiśyā vadhārthīyaṃ tvadvidhā rājaputrī || 5 ||
