Consisting of 18 books, the Mahabharata details the history and legends concerning ancient India (Bharata), including a major battle campaign involving the Kauravas and the Pandavas, also known as the Kurukshetra War. This portion also contains the Bhagavad-Gita. Alternative titles: Mahābhārata (महाभारत).

गान्धार्युवाच ।
एष माधव पुत्रो मे विकर्णः प्राज्ञसंमतः ।
भूमौ विनिहतः शेते भीमेन शतधा कृतः ॥ १ ॥

eṣa mādhava putro me vikarṇaḥ prājñasaṃmataḥ |
bhūmau vinihataḥ śete bhīmena śatadhā kṛtaḥ || 1 ||
