Consisting of 18 books, the Mahabharata details the history and legends concerning ancient India (Bharata), including a major battle campaign involving the Kauravas and the Pandavas, also known as the Kurukshetra War. This portion also contains the Bhagavad-Gita. Alternative titles: Mahābhārata (महाभारत).

शृणु भूयः प्रवक्ष्यामि मार्गस्यैतस्य विस्तरम् ।
यच्छ्रुत्वा विप्रमुच्यन्ते संसारेभ्यो विचक्षणाः ॥ २ ॥

śṛṇu bhūyaḥ pravakṣyāmi mārgasyaitasya vistaram |
yacchrutvā vipramucyante saṃsārebhyo vicakṣaṇāḥ || 2 ||
