Consisting of 18 books, the Mahabharata details the history and legends concerning ancient India (Bharata), including a major battle campaign involving the Kauravas and the Pandavas, also known as the Kurukshetra War. This portion also contains the Bhagavad-Gita. Alternative titles: Mahābhārata (महाभारत).

तथा यौवनजं दर्पमास्थिते ते सुते नृप ।
न त्वया सुहृदां वाक्यं ब्रुवतामवधारितम् ।
स्वार्थश्च न कृतः कश्चिल्लुब्धेन फलगृद्धिना ॥ २३ ॥

na tvayā suhṛdāṃ vākyaṃ bruvatāmavadhāritam |
