Consisting of 18 books, the Mahabharata details the history and legends concerning ancient India (Bharata), including a major battle campaign involving the Kauravas and the Pandavas, also known as the Kurukshetra War. This portion also contains the Bhagavad-Gita. Alternative titles: Mahābhārata (महाभारत).

वैशंपायन उवाच ।
हते पुत्रशते दीनं छिन्नशाखमिव द्रुमम् ।
पुत्रशोकाभिसंतप्तं धृतराष्ट्रं महीपतिम् ॥ ४ ॥

vaiśaṃpāyana uvāca |
hate putraśate dīnaṃ chinnaśākhamiva drumam |
putraśokābhisaṃtaptaṃ dhṛtarāṣṭraṃ mahīpatim || 4 ||
