Consisting of 18 books, the Mahabharata details the history and legends concerning ancient India (Bharata), including a major battle campaign involving the Kauravas and the Pandavas, also known as the Kurukshetra War. तामाशां हृदये कृत्वा समाश्वास्य च भारत ।
मद्रराजं च समरे समाश्रित्य महारथम् ।
नाथवन्तमथात्मानममन्यत सुतस्तव ॥ १७ ॥

tāmāśāṃ hṛdaye kṛtvā samāśvāsya ca bhārata |
madrarājaṃ ca samare samāśritya mahāratham |
