Consisting of 18 books, the Mahabharata details the history and legends concerning ancient India (Bharata), including a major battle campaign involving the Kauravas and the Pandavas, also known as the Kurukshetra War. अनुक्त्वा च ततः किंचिच्छरवर्षेण पाण्डवम् ।
छादयामास समरे क्रुद्धोऽन्तक इव प्रजाः ॥ ३५ ॥

anuktvā ca tataḥ kiṃciccharavarṣeṇa pāṇḍavam |
chādayāmāsa samare kruddho'ntaka iva prajāḥ || 35 ||
