Consisting of 18 books, the Mahabharata details the history and legends concerning ancient India (Bharata), including a major battle campaign involving the Kauravas and the Pandavas, also known as the Kurukshetra War. This portion also contains the Bhagavad-Gita. Alternative titles: Mahābhārata (महाभारत).

ते बाणाः समसज्जन्त क्षिप्तास्ताभ्यां तु भारत ।
द्योतयन्तो दिशः सर्वास्तच्च सैन्यं समन्ततः ॥ २४ ॥

te bāṇāḥ samasajjanta kṣiptāstābhyāṃ tu bhārata |
dyotayanto diśaḥ sarvāstacca sainyaṃ samantataḥ || 24 ||
