Consisting of 18 books, the Mahabharata details the history and legends concerning ancient India (Bharata), including a major battle campaign involving the Kauravas and the Pandavas, also known as the Kurukshetra War. तं तथा व्यथितं दृष्ट्वा कृष्णो वचनमब्रवीत् ।
मा व्यथां कुरु कौन्तेय नैतत्त्वय्युपपद्यते ।
वैक्लव्यं भरतश्रेष्ठ यथा प्राकृतपूरुषे ॥ २३ ॥
