Consisting of 18 books, the Mahabharata details the history and legends concerning ancient India (Bharata), including a major battle campaign involving the Kauravas and the Pandavas, also known as the Kurukshetra War. This portion also contains the Bhagavad-Gita. Alternative titles: Mahābhārata (महाभारत).

संग्रामे युध्यमानस्य वहतो महतीं धुरम् ।
धरण्यां मम पुत्रस्य पातयिष्यति यः शिरः ।
तस्यापि शतधा मूर्धा फलिष्यति न संशयः ॥ २२ ॥

saṃgrāme yudhyamānasya vahato mahatīṃ dhuram |
dharaṇyāṃ mama putrasya pātayiṣyati yaḥ śiraḥ |
tasyāpi śatadhā mūrdhā phaliṣyati na saṃśayaḥ || 22 ||
