Consisting of 18 books, the Mahabharata details the history and legends concerning ancient India (Bharata), including a major battle campaign involving the Kauravas and the Pandavas, also known as the Kurukshetra War. अक्षौहिण्यश्च संरब्धा धार्तराष्ट्रस्य भारत ।
यत्ता मदर्थं तिष्ठन्ति कुरुवीराभिरक्षिताः ॥ ४४ ॥

akṣauhiṇyaśca saṃrabdhā dhārtarāṣṭrasya bhārata |
yattā madarthaṃ tiṣṭhanti kuruvīrābhirakṣitāḥ || 44 ||
