Consisting of 18 books, the Mahabharata details the history and legends concerning ancient India (Bharata), including a major battle campaign involving the Kauravas and the Pandavas, also known as the Kurukshetra War. असुरसुरमनुष्याः पक्षिणो वोरगा वा पितृरजनिचरा वा ब्रह्मदेवर्षयो वा ।
चरमचरमपीदं यत्परं चापि तस्मात्तदपि मम रिपुं तं रक्षितुं नैव शक्ताः ॥ ३८ ॥

asurasuramanuṣyāḥ pakṣiṇo voragā vā pitṛrajanicarā vā brahmadevarṣayo vā |
caramacaramapīdaṃ yatparaṃ cāpi tasmāttadapi mama ripuṃ taṃ rakṣituṃ naiva śaktāḥ || 38 ||
