हतं द्विपं वीक्ष्य च तौ महा-बलौ
कंसो मनस्वी भयम् आप चेतसि
मञ्च-स्थिता हर्षित-मानसश् च
चन्द्रं चकोर इव ते सुखं ययुः
hataṃ dvipaṃ vīkṣya ca tau mahā-balau
kaṃso manasvī bhayam āpa cetasi
mañca-sthitā harṣita-mānasaś ca
candraṃ cakora iva te sukhaṃ yayuḥ
hatam—killed; dvipam—the elephant; vīkṣya—seeing; ca—and; tau—They; mahā-balau—very powerful; kaṃsaḥ—Kaṃsa; manasvī—thoughtful; bhayam—fear; āpa—attained; cetasi—in the heart; mañca-sthitā—the people in the grandstands; harṣita-mānasaś—their hearts filled with joy; ca—and; candram—the moon; cakorāḥ—cakora birds; iva—like; te—they; sukhaṃhappiness; yayuḥ—attained.
English translation of verse 5.7.38:
When Kaṃsa saw that the elephant had been killed, he became pensive and frightened at heart. When the people in the grandstands saw it, they became happy at heart like cakora birds gazing at the moon.
