अपत्यं केन पुण्येन
भूयान् मे ऽत्र शुभं नृप
एवं चिन्तयतस् तस्य
बहवो वत्सरा गताः

apatyaṃ kena puṇyena
bhūyān me 'tra śubhaṃ nṛpa
evaṃ cintayatas tasya
bahavo vatsarā gatāḥ

apatyam—a child; kenaby what?; puṇyena—pious deed; bhūyān—may be; me—of me; atra—here; śubham—auspiciousness; nṛpaO king; evam—thus; cintayataḥ—thinking; tasya—of him; bahavaḥ—many; vatsarāyears; gatāḥ—passed.

English translation of verse 4.5.5:

He spent many years wondering, "What pious deed with bring me a child?"
