जडा जडं न जनन्त्यो
जडोन्मत्त-पिशाच-वात्
अब्रुवन्त्यो ब्रुवन्त्यो वा
गत-लज्जा गत-व्यथाः

jaḍā jaḍaṃ na janantyo
jaḍonmatta-piśāca-vāt
abruvantyo bruvantyo vā
gata-lajjā gata-vyathāḥ

jaḍāḥinert; jaḍam—the inert; na—not; janantyaḥ—undersatnding; jaḍonmatta-piśāca-vāt—as if haunted by a ghost; abruvantyaḥ—not speaking; bruvantyaḥ—speaking; vā—or; gata-lajjāwithout embarrassment; gata-vyathāḥ—without care.

English translation of verse 4.4.10:

Sometimes they were stunned, sometimes they could not understand that inanimate objects were actually not alive, sometimes they were silent, and sometimes they spoke on and on without care or shyness.
