कालिन्द्य्-उपवने श्यामैस्
तमालैः स-घनैर् वृते
कदम्ब-कुञ्ज-शोभाढ्ये
चेरतू राम-केश्वौ
kālindy-upavane śyāmais
tamālaiḥ sa-ghanair vṛte
kadamba-kuñja-śobhāḍhye
ceratū rāma-keśvau
kālindī—of the Yamunā; upavane—in the gardens; śyāmaiḥ—with dark; tamālaiḥ—tamala trees; sa-ghanaiḥ—sturdy; vṛte—filled; kadamba—of kadamba trees; kuñja—grove; śobhā—beauty; aḍhye—rich; ceratuḥ—moved; rāma-keśvau—Kṛṣṇa and Balarāma.
English translation of verse 1.17.16:
In the Yamunā's forests opulent with kadamba groves and sturdy black tamāla trees, Kṛṣṇa and Balarāma walked.
