श्री-नन्द-राज-गृह-कृत्रिम-सिंह-रूपं
दृष्ट्वा व्रजन् प्रतिरवन् नृप भिरुवद् यः
नीत्वा च तं निज-सुतं गृहम् आव्रजन्तीं
गोप्यो व्रजे स-घृणया ह्य् अवदन् यशोदाम्
śrī-nanda-rāja-gṛha-kṛtrima-siṃha-rūpaṃ
dṛṣṭvā vrajan pratiravan nṛpa bhiruvad yaḥ
nītvā ca taṃ nija-sutaṃ gṛham āvrajantīṃ
gopyo vraje sa-ghṛṇayā hy avadan yaśodām
śrī-nanda-rāja—of King Nanda; gṛha—in the home; kṛtrima—artificial; siṃha—lion; rūpam—form; dṛṣṭvā—seeing; vrajan—going; pratiravan—roaring a challenge; nṛpa—O king; bhiruvat—frightening; yaḥ—who; nītvā—leading; ca—and; tam—Him; nija—his own; sutam—son; gṛham—home; āvrajantīm—coming; gopyaḥ—the gopīs; vraje—in Vraja; sa-ghṛṇayā—with compassion; hi—indeed; avadan—told; yaśodām—Yaśodā.
English translation of verse 1.17.9:
When infant Kṛṣṇa saw the statue of a lion at the entrance to King Nanda's home, He became frightened and began to cry. The gopīs took Him inside and compassionately spoke to Yaśodā.
