ततः सुरास् तेन निहन्यमाना
विदुद्रुवुर् दीन-धियो दिशं ते
केचिद् रणे मुक्त-शिखा बभूवुर्
भीताः स्म इत्थं युधि वादिनस् ते

tataḥ surās tena nihanyamānā
vidudruvur dīna-dhiyo diśaṃ te
kecid raṇe mukta-śikhā babhūvur
bhītāḥ sma itthaṃ yudhi vādinas te

tataḥ—then; surās—the demigods; tena—by that; nihanyamānās—being killed;

English translation of verse 1.7.53:

vidudruvur—fled; dīna—unhappy; dhiyo—at heart; diśaṃ—the direction; te—

they; kecid—some; raṇe—in the battleground; mukta—abandoned; śikhās—

helmets; babhūvur—became; bhītāḥ—frightened; sma—indeed; itthaṃ—thus;

yudhi—in the fight; vādinas—saying; te—they.

As Kaṃsa was attacking and killing them, the dispirited demigods fled in all directions. Some, their helmets lost, screamed in terror.
