सीता यथेति वाक्येन
दुर्घटो दुर्लभो वरः
एक-पत्नी-व्रतो ऽहं वै
मर्यादा-पुरुषोत्तमः
sītā yatheti vākyena
durghaṭo durlabho varaḥ
eka-patnī-vrato 'haṃ vai
maryādā-puruṣottamaḥ
sītā—Siātā; yathā—as; iti—thus; vākyena—by the statement; durghaṭaḥ—impossible; durlabhaḥ—unattainable; varaḥ—benediction; eka—one; patnī—wife; vrataḥ—vow; aham—I; vai—indeed; maryādā—of the rules of religion; puruṣa—of persons; uttamaḥ—the best.
English translation of verse 1.4.53:
This request, to become "as Sītā is" is impossible and can never be granted. I have vowed to accept only one wife, and I am the best of they who follow the rules of religion.
