सुराणां रक्षणार्थाय
राक्षसानां वधाय च
त्रेतायां रामचन्द्रो ऽभूद्
वीरो दशरथात्मजः

surāṇāṃ rakṣaṇārthāya
rākṣasānāṃ vadhāya ca
tretāyāṃ rāmacandro 'bhūd
vīro daśarathātmajaḥ

surāṇām—of the devotees; rakṣaṇārthāya—for protection; rākṣasānām—of the demons; vadhāya—for the killing; ca—also; tretāyām—in Tretā-yuga; rāmacandraḥRāmacandra; abhūt—was; vīraḥ—hero; daśarathaof Daśaratha; ātmajaḥ—the son.

English translation of verse 1.4.35:

To protect the devotees and kill the demons the Lord appeared in Tretā-yuga as Daśaratha's son, the hero Rāmacandra.
