श्री-ब्रह्मोवाच
हे दीन-बन्धो हे देव
जगत्-कारण-कारण
यूथस्य लक्षणं सर्वं
तन् मे ब्रूहि परेश्वर
śrī-brahmovāca
he dīna-bandho he deva
jagat-kāraṇa-kāraṇa
yūthasya lakṣaṇaṃ sarvaṃ
tan me brūhi pareśvara
śrī-brahmā uvāca—Śrī Brahmā said; he—O; dīna—of the poor; bandhaḥ—friend; he—O; deva—Lord; jagat—of the universes; kāraṇa—of the causes; kāraṇa—the cause; yūthasya—of the groups; lakṣaṇam—characteristic; sarvaṃ—all; tat—that; me—to me; brūhi—please speak; para-īśvara—O Supreme Lord.
English translation of verse 1.4.9:
Śrī Brahmā said: O friend of the poor, O Lord, O cause of the universes' causes,
O Supreme Personality of Godhead, please completely describe these groups (of gopīs).
