त्वां ब्रह्म केचिद् अवयन्ति परे च कालं
केचित् प्रसाङ्ख्यम् अपरे भुवि कर्म-रूपम्
पूर्वे च योगम् अपरे किल कर्तृ-भावम्
अन्योक्तिभिर् न विदितं शरणं गताः स्मः
tvāṃ brahma kecid avayanti pare ca kālaṃ
kecit prasāṅkhyam apare bhuvi karma-rūpam
pūrve ca yogam apare kila kartṛ-bhāvam
anyoktibhir na viditaṃ śaraṇaṃ gatāḥ smaḥ
tvām—You; brahma—the greatest; kecid—some; avayanti—teach; pare—others; ca—also; kālaṃ—time; kecit—some; prasāṅkhyam—the sum of everything; apare—others; bhuvi—in the world; karma—of karma; rūpam—the form; pūrve—the first; ca—also; yogam—yoga; apare—others; kila—indeed; kartṛ-bhāvam—the doer; anya—of others; uktibhir—by the words; na—not; viditam—known; śaraṇam—shelter; gatāḥ—gone; smaḥ—we.
English translation of verse 1.3.18:
Some teach that You are the greatest, some that You are time, some that You are the sum total of everything, some that You are karma, some that You are yoga, and some that You are the first cause. We take shelter of You, who cannot be perfectly known by all their words.
