अत्रैवोदाहरन्तीमम्
इतिहासं पुरातनम्
यस्य श्रवण-मात्रेण
महा-दोषः प्रशम्यति
atraivodāharantīmam
itihāsaṃ purātanam
yasya śravaṇa-mātreṇa
mahā-doṣaḥ praśamyati
atra—here; eva—indeed; udāharanti—they speak; imam—this; itihāsam—history; purātanam—ancient; yasya—of whom; śravaṇa—hearing; mātreṇa—by merely; mahā—great; doṣaḥ—fault; praśamyati—is pacified.
English translation of verse 1.1.9:
Of this they tell the story of an event in ancient history, simply by hearing of which great sin is removed.
