Panels of Miniature-Sculptures
Over the Vyala-mala and beneath the pillars and pilasters of the demkoshtas of some temples, there are panels of miniature-sculptures of great artistic merit. Some of them deal with the various manifestations of Siva and Vishnu and some Puranic episodes.
Such panels are found in the Nagesvara temple at Kumbakonam, the Tiru-Virattanesvara temple at Tirukkandiyur, the Virattanesvara temple at Kilur (near Tirukkoyilur), the Tiruvural Mahadeva temple at Takkolam, the Brahmapurisvara temple at Pullamangai, the Naltunai Isvaram at Punjai and the Karkotaka Isvaram at Kamarasavalli. These panels have not been fully photographed and studied. It will be an interesting project of absorbing interest.
