The Chaitanya Bhagavata 2.23.18, English translation, including a commentary (Gaudiya-bhasya). This text is similair to the Caitanya-caritamrita and narrates the pastimes of Lord Caitanya, proclaimed to be the direct incarnation of Krishna (as Bhagavan) This is verse 18 of Madhya-khanda chapter 23—“Wandering about Navadvipa On the Day the Lord Delivered the Kazi”.

Bengali text, Devanagari and Unicode transliteration of verse 2.23.18:

সর্ব-কাল পযঃ-পান, অন্ন নাহি খায প্রভুর কীর্তন বিপ্র দেখিবারে চায ॥ ১৮ ॥

सर्व-काल पयः-पान, अन्न नाहि खाय प्रभुर कीर्तन विप्र देखिबारे चाय ॥ १८ ॥

sarva-kāla payaḥ-pāna, anna nāhi khāya prabhura kīrtana vipra dekhibāre cāya || 18 ||

sarva-kala payah-pana, anna nahi khaya prabhura kirtana vipra dekhibare caya (18)

English translation:

(18) He only drank milk and did not eat rice. This brāhmaṇa wanted to see the Lord’s kīrtana.

Commentary: Gauḍīya-bhāṣya by Śrīla Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī Ṭhākura:

Since the brahmacārī who considered that cooked food destroyed life and who took a vow to live only on uncooked foods like milk and mango was unqualified to hear the glories of the Supreme Lord, he had no qualification to hear the kīrtana behind closed doors. Direct service to the Supreme Lord is never found within the principles of dry renunciation.

Foolish people who misuse renunciation consider that the ingredients of the Lord’s worship are fit for rejection.
