The Chaitanya Bhagavata 1.11.114, English translation, including a commentary (Gaudiya-bhasya). This text is similair to the Caitanya-caritamrita and narrates the pastimes of Lord Caitanya, proclaimed to be the direct incarnation of Krishna (as Bhagavan) This is verse 114 of Adi-khanda chapter 11—“Meeting with Shri Ishvara Puri”.

এক-দিন প্রভু তা’ন কবিত্ব শুনিযা হাসি’ দূষিলেন, “ধাতু না লাগে” বলিযা প্রভু বোলে,—“এ ধাতু ‘আত্মনেপদী’ নয” বলিযা চলিলা প্রভু আপন-আলয ঈশ্বর-পুরী ও সর্ব-শাস্ত্রেতে পণ্ডিত বিদ্যা-রস-বিচারে ও বড হরষিত প্রভু গেলে সেই ‘ধাতু’ করেন বিচার সিদ্ধান্ত করেন তঙ্হি অশেষ-প্রকার সেই ‘ধাতু’ করেন ‘আত্মনেপদী’ নাম আর দিনে প্রভু গেলে, করেন ব্যাখ্যান “যে ধাতু ‘পরস্মৈপদী’ বলি’ গেলা তুমি তাহা এই সাধিলুঙ্ ‘আত্মনেপদী’ আমি” ॥ ১১৪-১১৯ ॥

एक-दिन प्रभु ता’न कवित्व शुनिया हासि’ दूषिलेन, “धातु ना लागे” बलिया प्रभु बोले,—“ए धातु ‘आत्मनेपदी’ नय” बलिया चलिला प्रभु आपन-आलय ईश्वर-पुरी ओ सर्व-शास्त्रेते पण्डित विद्या-रस-विचारे ओ बड हरषित प्रभु गेले सेइ ‘धातु’ करेन विचार सिद्धान्त करेन तङ्हि अशेष-प्रकार सेइ ‘धातु’ करेन ‘आत्मनेपदी’ नाम आर दिने प्रभु गेले, करेन व्याख्यान “ये धातु ‘परस्मैपदी’ बलि’ गेला तुमि ताहा एइ साधिलुङ् ‘आत्मनेपदी’ आमि” ॥ ११४-११९ ॥

eka-dina prabhu tā’na kavitva śuniyā hāsi’ dūṣilena, “dhātu nā lāge” baliyā prabhu bole,—“e dhātu ‘ātmanepadī’ naya” baliyā calilā prabhu āpana-ālaya īśvara-purī o sarva-śāstrete paṇḍita vidyā-rasa-vicāre o baḍa haraṣita prabhu gele sei ‘dhātu’ karena vicāra siddhānta karena taṅhi aśeṣa-prakāra sei ‘dhātu’ karena ‘ātmanepadī’ nāma āra dine prabhu gele, karena vyākhyāna “ye dhātu ‘parasmaipadī’ bali’ gelā tumi tāhā ei sādhiluṅ ‘ātmanepadī’ āmi” || 114-119 ||

eka-dina prabhu ta’na kavitva suniya hasi’ dusilena, “dhatu na lage” baliya prabhu bole,—“e dhatu ‘atmanepadi’ naya” baliya calila prabhu apana-alaya isvara-puri o sarva-sastrete pandita vidya-rasa-vicare o bada harasita prabhu gele sei ‘dhatu’ karena vicara siddhanta karena tanhi asesa-prakara sei ‘dhatu’ karena ‘atmanepadi’ nama ara dine prabhu gele, karena vyakhyana “ye dhatu ‘parasmaipadi’ bali’ gela tumi taha ei sadhilun ‘atmanepadi’ ami” (114-119)

English translation:

(114-119) After hearing his poetry one day, the Lord smiled and said, “The verb

root of this sentence is incorrect. The ātmanepadī form should not be used here.” After saying this, the Lord returned home. Īśvara Purī was a learned scholar in the scriptures, and he enjoyed analyzing scholastic topics. After Nimāi left, Īśvara Purī considered the verb root that he had used and came to a conclusion from many different angles. He left the verb in its ātmanepadī form, and when Nimāi came the next day, he explained, “I have concluded that the verb that You said yesterday should be parasmaipadī should remain ātmanepadī.”

Commentary: Gauḍīya-bhāṣya by Śrīla Bhaktisiddhānta Sarasvatī Ṭhākura:

Dhātus are verb roots that indicate actions. When mixed with the ten inflective classes beginning with laṭ they produce the various tenses and moods. Considering each verb in the three persons and three numbers results in nine forms for each tense and mood. Some of these roots are ātmanepadī, and some are parasmaipadī; and apart from these, some are ubhayapadī. The parasmaipadī roots have 90 forms, and there are the same number of ātmanepadī forms. Thus altogether there are 180 forms of these two kinds of roots.

Since Nimai Paṇḍita said that the form of the root in the verse spoken by Īśvara Purī was not ātmanepadī, Īśvara Purīpāda concluded that according to grammar the form of the root was ubhayapadī. Therefore there was no fault in using the ātmanepadī form of the root.
