This page describes effects of planetary combination on marriage (vivaha-patala) which is the one hundred third Chapter of the English translation of the Brihat-samhita. This work, written by Varahamihira in the 6th century, is classified as jyotisha literature, also known as Indian astronomy. It contains however, also content regarding astrology, palmistry, agriculture, gardening, perfumes, medicines and various other encyclopedic topics.

Chapter 103 - Effects of planetary combination on marriage (vivāha-paṭala)

1. If at the time of marriage (vivāha) the rising sign be occupied by the Sun or Mars, the woman will become a widow; if it be occupied by Rāhu, the son will die. If by Saturn, there will be poverty; if by Venus. Mercury or Jupiter, the woman will remain chaste; and if by the Moon, the woman will die early.

2. If at the time of marriage, the 2nd house from the ascendant be occupied by the Sun, Saturn, Rāhu or Mars, there will be much suffering from poverty; if it be occupied by Jupiter, Venus or Mercury, the woman will become rich and will not become a widow and if the 2nd house be occupied by the Moon, she will get many sons.

3. If at the time of Marriage, the 3rd house from the ascendant be occupied by the Sun, the Moon, Mars, Jupiter, Venus or Mercury, the woman will have many sons and will become rich; if the 3rd house be occupied by Saturn, the woman will be liked by all and if it be occupied by Rāhu, she will die early.

4. If at the time of marriage, the 4th house from the ascendant be occupied by Saturn, the woman will not have much milk; if it be occupied by the Sun and Moon, the woman will not be generally liked; if it be occupied by Rāhu, her husband will have another wife, if it be occupied by Mars, she will have very little wealth; and if it be occupied by Venus, Jupiter or Mercury, the woman will be happy.

5. If at the time of Marriage the 5th house from the ascendant be occupied by the Sun or Mars, there will be death of sons; if it be occupied by Jupiter. Venus or Mercury, the woman will get many sons; if by Rāhu, she will die early, if by Saturn she will be afflicted with serious diseases; and if it be occupied by the Moon she will get daughters.

6. If at the time of Marriage, the 6th house from the ascendant be occupied by Saturn, the Sun, Rāhu, Jupiter or Mars, the woman will be liked by all for her good nature and she will show due respect to her father-in-law and others; if it be occupied by the Moon, she will become a widow; if by Venus, she will become poor, and if by Mercury, she will become prosperous and quarrelsome.

7. If at the time of Marriage (vivāha), the 7th house from the ascendant be occupied by Saturn, the woman will become a widow; if it be occupied by Mars, she will suffer imprisonment; if by Jupiter; she will suffer from torture; if by Mercury she will suffer miseries; if by Rāhu, she will suffer loss of wealth; if by the Sun she will suffer from diseases; if by the Moon, she will travel to foreign lands and if by Venus, she will die early.

8. If at the time of Marriage, the 8th house from the ascendant be occupied by Jupiter or Mercury, there will be separation between husband and wife; if it be occupied by the Moon, Venus or Rāhu, the woman will die early; if by the Sun she will escape widowhood; if by Mars she will be afflicted with diseases; and if by Saturn she will become rich and will be liked by her husband.

9. If at the time of Marriage the 9th house from the ascendant be occupied by Venus, the Sun, Mars or Jupiter, the woman will be charitable; if it be occupied by Mercury she will be free from diseases; if by Rāhu or Saturn she will be barren; and if by the Moon, she will bear daughters and will be of a wandering nature.

10. If at the time of Marriage, the 10th house from the ascendant be occupied by Rāhu, the woman will become a widow; if it be occupied by Saturn and the Sun, she will be inclined towards sinful deeds; if by Mars, she will die early; if by the Moon, she will become poor and unchaste, and if by any of the other planets, she will be rich and liked by all.

11. If at the time of Marriage the 11th house from the ascendant be occupied by the Sun, the woman will get many sons; if it be occupied by the Moon, she will become rich; if by Mars, she will get sons; if by Saturn, she will become very wealthy; if by Jupiter, she will be of long life; if by Mercury, she will live in plenty; if by Rāhu she will die before her husband and if by Venus she will become wealthy.

12. If at the time of marriage the 12th house from the ascendant be occupied by Jupiter, the woman will become rich; if it be occupied by the Sun, she will become poor, if by the Moon, she will lose her wealth; if by Rāhu, she will become unchaste; if by Venus, she will be chaste; if by Mercury she will get many sons and grandsons and if by Saturn or Mars, she will be fond of liquor.

13. The most excellent hour for marriage (vivāha) is the hour in the evening when cows are being driven home, and the sky is covered with dust raised by their hoofs striking against the ground while running. The married woman will get wealth, health and sons and will be prosperous. This hour is known as Godhūli Lagna. In the case of such hour, the character of the Nakṣatra, the tithi, the yoga, the karaṇa, or the lagna need not be considered. Such an hour will make a person happy and prosperous.
