135. The verse 'Deft, wise' (rbhur dhirah: ix. 87. 3) should be held to be addressed to Rbhu a. Now three gods are here b mentioned incidentally (nipata) in three verses (pada) c: - arbhavastu, arbhavasta fk, arbhavastr m', arttavastu b. - bhavetpada fr, bhavetyada k, bhave pada m', bhevetpada b. - rbhurdhira r, rptavira m', kratavira bfk - nipataistu tribhih padaih 1, nipane castadyas fk, nipatenaivastadyas bm'. - ihoditah bfkr, iheritah m'. - 135 is found in B and m1 only. b - * There is no reference to this pada in the Sarvanukramani. This line must be an introduction to what follows in regard to Rg-veda ix. 96. 6, stating in a more general way what is said in 136 ab. It is not clear to me of what 135°, according to the reading of bfkm (which is one syllable short), is a corruption. That is, Rg-veda ix. 96. 6 abo. 136. three (deities) are mentioned a with these three (verses), each containing a couplet b, (beginning) 'The Brahman of the gods' (brahma devanam: ix. 96. 6 abe); or rather it is Soma who is (here) praised as (representing) the Sun and the Soulc. - - tisroktas m'r, tisrokta hd, tisroktam b, tisroktam fk - tribhistvetair kr, tribhistvetai m', tribhistvete h, trbhistvete d, tribhistvaitai b, ॰tveter f. - dvrca dvrcaih hdm', dvrcairrcaih r, dvrcai naca b, hacairrca fk - suryavaccatmavaccapi hd, suryavarcatmavacapi r' r' r', suryavacca- tmavaccayam B.- - soma eva va Am', soma ityapi B. -136° = 134. & b I underTisroktah irregularly contracted for tisra uktah; cp. i. 50; iii. 94, &c. stand this to mean that each pada here consists, as it were, of a couplet: brahma devanam, padavih kavinam; rsir vipranam, mahiso mrganam; syeno grdhranam, svadhitir vananam. (C) Rg-veda ix. 96. 5, 6 are commented upon in the Nirukta Parisista, ii. 13, 14, where Soma is explained as the Sun (surya) and the Soul (atman). The Sarvanukramani makes no reference to Rg-veda ix. 96. 6. 137. Now while a drought was prevailing, the Lord of Saci asked (the) seersa, 'In this great time of distress, by what activity do you live b?' vartantyam hdr, varttyanyam 1, varttanya k, varttatam b. - jivatha b, jivatha fk, jivyatha hdr. * That is probably, the seers of the ninth Mandala: cp. 141. This is meant as an introduction to Rg-veda ix. 112; but it misrepresents the situation, as there is no reference to a drought in the hymn. Cp. Nirukta vi. 5: indra rsin papracha, durbhikse kena jivatiti; tesam ekah pratyuvaca.

'A cart, a field, kine, tillage, water that does not flow away (asyandana) a, a forest, the sea, a mountain, a king-by these means (evam) we live b.' krsir br, kramar m', rr fkr 2 (jalam Niti nañjari ). - asyandanam bm' (Niti nañjari), asyadanam fr, asyanamdanam kr". - vanam bfm'r (Niti nañjari), danam kr 2. - samudrah all MSS., udadhih Niti nañjari - parvato brNir., parvata m'fk - In place of evam jivamahe vayam, the Nirukta has durbhice navah This sloka is not found in A. b a I take asyandanam to be a noun, as, according to the reading of the Nirukta, nine means of livelihood are here enumerated. This is, of course, the answer of the seers; cp. 137, note b. The context indicates that this sloka, though found in Bm1 only, is appropriate here, while its obviously un-Vedic character shows it to be out of place in the Nirukta. Hence there can be little doubt that it is an interpolation from the Brihaddevata; this is more likely than that it should have been introduced into both works from some other common source. Durga does not comment on the sloka. Cp. Indische Studien, ii. 158. Somewhat similar enumerations are found in Manu x. 116 (dasa jivanahetavah); and Yajnavalkya iii. 42 (apattau jivanani): cp. the Mitaksara on this passage. 139. In praising (Indra) the seer Sisu, son of Angiras, declared (this) to him with the hymn Variously' (nananam: ix. 112) in the presence of the (other) seers. - stuvanneva Am', atha stuvan B. - rsir fk, risir b, hyrsir hm r. - rsinam 1, risinam b, hyasinam hm' r. - eva Am', va B. - The end of the varga is here marked by in bfk, not in d.
