The Brihad-bhagavatamrita Verse 2.4.99, English translation, including commentary (Dig-darshini-tika): an important Vaishnava text dealing with the importance of devotional service. The Brihad-bhagavatamrita, although an indepent Sanskrit work, covers the essential teachings of the Shrimad Bhagavatam (Bhagavata-purana). This is verse 2.4.99 contained in Chapter 4—Vaikuntha (the spiritual world)—of Part two (prathama-khanda).

Sanskrit text, Unicode transliteration, Word-for-word and English translation of verse 2.4.99:

पूर्वाभ्यास-वशेनानुकीर्तयामि कदाप्य् अहम् ।
बहुधोच्चैर् अये कृष्ण गोपालेति मुहुर् मुहुः ॥ ९९ ॥

pūrvābhyāsa-vaśenānukīrtayāmi kadāpy aham |
bahudhoccair aye kṛṣṇa gopāleti muhur muhuḥ || 99 ||

pūrva-abhyāsa–of previous practice; vaśena–by the influence; anukīrtayāmi–I describe; kadā api–sometimes; aham–I; bahudhā–by numerous names; uccaiḥ–loudly; aye kṛṣṇa–O Kṛṣṇa!; gopāla–O cowherd boy!; iti–thus; muhuḥ muhuḥ–repeatedly.

Sometimes, out of previous habit, I would repeatedly call out in a loud voice, “O Kṛṣṇa! O Gopāla!” Thus, continually I performed different kinds of kīrtana.

Commentary: Dig-darśinī-ṭīkā with Bhāvānuvāda

(By Śrīla Sanātana Gosvāmī himself including a deep purport of that commentary)

Now, ever eager to attain the supreme destination, in this verse beginning with pūrva, Śrī Gopa-kumāra reveals the reason for his indifference to residence in Vaikuṇṭha also. He says, “While residing in Vaikuṇṭha, sometimes, due to my previous practice, I would engage in different types of kīrtana, calling out ‘O Kṛṣṇa, O Gopāla’.”
