The Brihad-bhagavatamrita Verse 2.3.17, English translation, including commentary (Dig-darshini-tika): an important Vaishnava text dealing with the importance of devotional service. The Brihad-bhagavatamrita, although an indepent Sanskrit work, covers the essential teachings of the Shrimad Bhagavatam (Bhagavata-purana). तस्यां कारण-रूपायां कार्य-रूपम् इदं जगत् ।
तद्-उपादनकं सर्वं स्फुरितं च व्यलोकयम् ॥ १७ ॥tasyāṃ kāraṇa-rūpāyāṃ kārya-rūpam idaṃ jagat |
tad-upādanakaṃ sarvaṃ sphuritaṃ ca vyalokayam || 17 ||tasyām–within her; kāraṇa-rūpāyām–who embodies the subtle causes of creation; kārya-rūpam–in the form of the material ingredients; idam–this; jagat–universe; tat-upādānakam–its ingredients; sarvam–all; sphuritam–manifest; ca–and; vyalokayam–I saw.
Within the goddess earth, who embodies the causal principle (kāraṇarūpā), I saw the effective, or active, principle (kārya-rūpa) being manifest, or in other words, I saw all the ingredients of the universe being manifest.

Śrī Gopa-kumāra says, “Just as clay is the ingredient cause (material, or upādāna, cause) of an earthen pot, similarly, the covering composed of earth, which embodies the causal principle, is the ingredient cause–the cause of the material ingredients–of this manifest universe. Since the effect (kārya) is perceived in the cause (kāraṇa), all the pleasures of the universe, or brahmāṇḍa, are present in the earth layer.”
