The Brihad-bhagavatamrita Verse 2.1.212, English translation, including commentary (Dig-darshini-tika): an important Vaishnava text dealing with the importance of devotional service. The Brihad-bhagavatamrita, although an indepent Sanskrit work, covers the essential teachings of the Shrimad Bhagavatam (Bhagavata-purana). This is verse 2.1.212 contained in Chapter 1—Vairagya (renunciation)—of Part two (prathama-khanda).

Sanskrit text, Unicode transliteration, Word-for-word and English translation of verse 2.1.212:

तथापि लोक-संमानादरतस् तादृशं सुखम् ।
न लभेय विनिर्विण्ण-मनास् तत्राभवं स्थितौ ॥ २१२ ॥

tathāpi loka-saṃmānādaratas tādṛśaṃ sukham |
na labheya vinirviṇṇa-manās tatrābhavaṃ sthitau || 212 ||

tathāpi–still; loka–of the people; sammāna–honor; ādarataḥ–because of respect; tādṛśam–such; sukham–happiness; na labheya–I could not get; vinirviṇṇa-manāḥ–extremely morose at heart; tatra–there; abhavam–I became; sthitau–while staying.

However, because the citizens continued to respect and honor me, I did not feel the happiness I felt before, and therefore I began to feel indifferent to living there.

Commentary: Dig-darśinī-ṭīkā with Bhāvānuvāda

(By Śrīla Sanātana Gosvāmī himself including a deep purport of that commentary)

Śrī Gopa-kumāra says, “Although I began residing there, engaging in devotional service as I liked, the indescribable happiness I had previously experienced was gone. Although I refused to accept people’s honor and worship, they still continued to revere me, and for this reason, I could not feel the same happiness as before. This is why I lost interest in staying in Puruṣottama-kṣetra, and in my mind there arose a strong urge to go to Śrī Vṛndāvana.”
