The Brihad-bhagavatamrita Verse 2.1.131, English translation, including commentary (Dig-darshini-tika): an important Vaishnava text dealing with the importance of devotional service. The Brihad-bhagavatamrita, although an indepent Sanskrit work, covers the essential teachings of the Shrimad Bhagavatam (Bhagavata-purana). This is verse 2.1.131 contained in Chapter 1—Vairagya (renunciation)—of Part two (prathama-khanda).

Sanskrit text, Unicode transliteration, Word-for-word and English translation of verse 2.1.131:

तच् छ्रूत्वाहं सुसम्प्राप्तो निधिं लब्ध्वेव निर्धनः ।
नष्टं वा बान्धवो बन्धुं परमं मुदम् आप्तवान् ॥ १३१ ॥

tac chrūtvāhaṃ susamprāpto nidhiṃ labdhveva nirdhanaḥ |
naṣṭaṃ vā bāndhavo bandhuṃ paramaṃ mudam āptavān || 131 ||

tat–that; śrutvā–hearing; aham–I; su-samprāptaḥ–happily attained; nidhim–immense wealth; labdhvā–attained; iva–like; nirdhanaḥ–a penniless man; naṣṭam–lost; –or; bāndhavaḥ–friend; bandhum–friend; paramām–great; mudam–happiness; āptavān–meeting.

When I heard this, I experienced the same joy a poor man feels upon suddenly attaining immense wealth, or the same happiness a person feels upon meeting a long-lost friend.

Commentary: Dig-darśinī-ṭīkā with Bhāvānuvāda

(By Śrīla Sanātana Gosvāmī himself including a deep purport of that commentary)

Śrī Gopa-kumāra gives two examples to explain the reason for his great happiness, saying, “I felt the same happiness experienced by a poor person when he receives unexpected wealth, or felt by a person when he meets a long-lost relative.”
