The Brihad-bhagavatamrita Verse 2.1.72, English translation, including commentary (Dig-darshini-tika): an important Vaishnava text dealing with the importance of devotional service. The Brihad-bhagavatamrita, although an indepent Sanskrit work, covers the essential teachings of the Shrimad Bhagavatam (Bhagavata-purana). This is verse 2.1.72 contained in Chapter 1—Vairagya (renunciation)—of Part two (prathama-khanda).

Sanskrit text, Unicode transliteration, Word-for-word and English translation of verse 2.1.72:

इदं स विमृशत्य् एषाम् उपास्यो जगद्-ईश्वरः ।
स एव माधवश् चायं मयान्यः कोऽप्य् उपास्यते ॥ ७२ ॥

idaṃ sa vimṛśaty eṣām upāsyo jagad-īśvaraḥ |
sa eva mādhavaś cāyaṃ mayānyaḥ ko'py upāsyate || 72 ||

idam–this; saḥ vimṛśati–he would think; eṣām–for them; upāsyaḥ–the worshipable object; jagad-īśvaraḥ–the Supreme Lord of the universe; saḥ–He; eva–only; mādhavaḥ–Śrī Mādhava; ca–and; ayam–He; mayā–by me; anyaḥ–another; kaḥ api–someone; upāsyate–is worshiped.

Rather, he always thought, “The worshipable Lord of these sādhus is indeed the Supreme Lord of the universe, who is also Śrī Mādhava. However, the personality I worship is someone else.

Commentary: Dig-darśinī-ṭīkā with Bhāvānuvāda

(By Śrīla Sanātana Gosvāmī himself including a deep purport of that commentary)

Śrī Parīkṣit says, “He thought, ‘The worshipable

Deity (upāsya-deva) of these saintly Vaiṣṇavas is Jagadīśvara, the Supreme Lord of the universe, and is also Śrī Mādhava, whose darśana I have been having. I accept the words of the saintly persons as authoritative in this matter. However, the Supreme Personality I worship is someone else.’”
