Brihad Bhagavatamrita (commentary)

by Śrī Śrīmad Bhaktivedānta Nārāyana Gosvāmī Mahārāja | 2005 | 440,179 words | ISBN-13: 9781935428329

The Brihad-bhagavatamrita Verse 1.7.80, English translation, including commentary (Dig-darshini-tika): an important Vaishnava text dealing with the importance of devotional service. The Brihad-bhagavatamrita, although an indepent Sanskrit work, covers the essential teachings of the Shrimad Bhagavatam (Bhagavata-purana). This is verse 1.7.80 contained in Chapter 7—Purna (pinnacle of excellent devotees)—of Part one (prathama-khanda).

Sanskrit text, Unicode transliteration, Word-for-word and English translation of verse 1.7.80:

ताभ्यां स्नेह-भरेणास्य पालनं तत् तद् ईहितम् ।
अतोऽस्यैतादृशो भावस् तयोर् युक्तो हि मे प्रियः ॥ ८० ॥

tābhyāṃ sneha-bhareṇāsya pālanaṃ tat tad īhitam |
ato'syaitādṛśo bhāvas tayor yukto hi me priyaḥ || 80 ||

Just as Śrī Nanda and Śrī Yaśodā affectionately raised Śrī Kṛṣṇa, that particular affectionate mood of Śrī Kṛṣṇā towards them is certainly mutual. I also love their sentiment.

Commentary: Dig-darśinī-ṭīkā with Bhāvānuvāda

(By Śrīla Sanātana Gosvāmī himself including a deep purport of that commentary)

The symptoms of the superiority of the glories of Śrī Nanda and Śrī Yaśodā are clearly expressed in the verses beginning with tābhyāṃ. Śrī Nanda and Yasodā affectionately brought up Śrī Kṛṣṇa and that account of indescribable nourishment and protection is celebrated everywhere. Therefore, that sentiment of Śrī Kṛṣṇa towards Śrī Nanda and Yaśodā is certainly mutual. In other words, whatever I personally experienced, that is also appropriate and I love this sentiment as well; otherwise, Śrī Kṛṣṇa would be guilty of ingratitude.
