The Brihad-bhagavatamrita Verse 1.5.65, English translation, including commentary (Dig-darshini-tika): an important Vaishnava text dealing with the importance of devotional service. The Brihad-bhagavatamrita, although an indepent Sanskrit work, covers the essential teachings of the Shrimad Bhagavatam (Bhagavata-purana). This is verse 1.5.65 contained in Chapter 5—Priya (the beloved devotees)—of Part one (prathama-khanda).

Sanskrit text, Unicode transliteration, Word-for-word and English translation of verse 1.5.65:

कर्मणा येन दुःखं स्यान् निज-प्रिय-जनस्य हि ।
न तस्याचरणं प्रीतेः कारुण्यस्यापि लक्षणम् ॥ ६५ ॥

karmaṇā yena duḥkhaṃ syān nija-priya-janasya hi |
na tasyācaraṇaṃ prīteḥ kāruṇyasyāpi lakṣaṇam || 65 ||

It is not a sign of affectionate mercy to perform activities which cause one’s beloved to become distressful.

Commentary: Dig-darśinī-ṭīkā with Bhāvānuvāda

(By Śrīla Sanātana Gosvāmī himself including a deep purport of that commentary)

Was not such behavior of Śrī Kṛṣṇa characteristic of the mercy that reveals sakhya-bhāva, the mellow of friendship? In reply, Śrīman Arjuna says that if by performing such activity the beloved becomes distressful, then to act out that behavior can never be a symptom of compassion or mercy, what to speak of being a symptom of affection.
