Brihad Bhagavatamrita (commentary)

by Śrī Śrīmad Bhaktivedānta Nārāyana Gosvāmī Mahārāja | 2005 | 440,179 words | ISBN-13: 9781935428329

The Brihad-bhagavatamrita Verse 1.3.54, English translation, including commentary (Dig-darshini-tika): an important Vaishnava text dealing with the importance of devotional service. The Brihad-bhagavatamrita, although an indepent Sanskrit work, covers the essential teachings of the Shrimad Bhagavatam (Bhagavata-purana). This is verse 1.3.54 contained in Chapter 3—Prapancatita (beyond the Material Plane)—of Part one (prathama-khanda).

Sanskrit text, Unicode transliteration, Word-for-word and English translation of verse 1.3.54:

पाञ्चभौतिक-देहा ये मर्त्य-लोक-निवासिनः ।
भगवद्-भक्ति-रसिका नमस्या मादृशां सदा ॥ ५४ ॥

pāñcabhautika-dehā ye martya-loka-nivāsinaḥ |
bhagavad-bhakti-rasikā namasyā mādṛśāṃ sadā || 54 ||

What more can I say? Rasika-bhaktas of Śrī Bhagavān, who assume bodies composed of the five elements to dwell on the earthly plane, always relish the devotional service of Bhagavān, being revered by demigods like myself.

Commentary: Dig-darśinī-ṭīkā with Bhāvānuvāda

(By Śrīla Sanātana Gosvāmī himself including a deep purport of that commentary)

This śloka containing the expression mādṛśāṃ namasya, “revered by myself,” is also applicable to all bhaktas or devotees who reside on the earthly plane. They are also favored recipients of the divine prema of Śrī Kṛṣṇa and are even comparatively superior.

Śrī Nārāyaṇa-vyūha stotra (Hayaśīrṣa Pañcarātra) also cites this:

ये त्यक्त-लोक-धर्मार्था विष्णु-भक्ति-वशं गतः
भजन्ति परमात्मानं तेभ्यो नित्यं नमो नमः

ye tyakta-loka-dharmārthā viṣṇu-bhakti-vaśaṃ gataḥ
bhajanti paramātmānaṃ tebhyo nityaṃ namo namaḥ

“I offer repeated obeisances unto those who renounce all kinds of mundane aims and duties to accept full shelter of śrī-viṣṇubhakti, that is, unto those who serve Śrī Bhagavān in the form of paramātmā, the Lord in the heart.”
