The Bhajana-rahasya Text 43, English translation, including commentary (vritti). The Bhajana-rahasya is a compilation of verses describing the mercy of the eight pairs of names (Yugala-nama) of the Maha-mantra. This is text 43 belonging to the chapter “Dvitiya-yama-sadhana (Pratah-kaliya-bhajana)” representing the first six dandas of the morning: approximately 6.00 a.m.–8.30 a.m.

Endeavours made in performing resolute bhajana are described in Hari-bhakti-vilāsa (20.382-384, 370, 379):

एवम् एकान्तिनां प्रायः कीर्तनं स्मरणं प्रभोः
कुर्वतां परम-प्रीत्या कृत्यमन्यन् न रोच्यते
भावेन केनचित् प्रेष्ठ-श्री-मूर्तेर् अङ्घ्रि-सेवने
स्याद् इच्छैषां स्व-मन्त्रेण स्व-रसेनैव तद्-विधिः
विहितेष्व् एव नित्येषु प्रवर्तन्ते स्वयं हिते
सर्व-त्यागे’प्य् अहेयायाः सर्वानर्थ-भुवश् च ते
कुर्युः प्रतिष्ठा-विष्ठायाः यत्नम् अस्पर्शने वरम्
प्रभाते चार्धराते च मध्याह्ने दिवस-क्षये
कीर्तयन्ति हरिं ये वै न तेषाम् अन्य-साधनम्

evam ekāntināṃ prāyaḥ kīrtanaṃ smaraṇaṃ prabhoḥ
kurvatāṃ parama-prītyā kṛtyamanyan na rocyate
bhāvena kenacit preṣṭha-śrī-mūrter aṅghri-sevane
syād icchaiṣāṃ sva-mantreṇa sva-rasenaiva tad-vidhiḥ
vihiteṣv eva nityeṣu pravartante svayaṃ hite
sarva-tyāge’py aheyāyāḥ sarvānartha-bhuvaś ca te
kuryuḥ pratiṣṭhā-viṣṭhāyāḥ yatnam asparśane varam
prabhāte cārdharāte ca madhyāhne divasa-kṣaye
kīrtayanti hariṃ ye vai na teṣām anya-sādhanam[1]

If a one-pointed devotee (aikāntika-bhakta) chants and contemplates the glories of his Prabhu, Śrī Viṣṇu, with great affection and according to his transcendental sentiments, he will have no taste for any other activity. With his particular mantra and in his particular mellow of devotion, he performs arcana in whatever mood he desires to serve the lotus feet of his beloved deity. Later, that same service transforms into his eternal service. Even if one has given up everything else, some last vestiges still need to be relinquished before this can happen: the desire for name and fame, or pratiṣṭhā, the root cause of all anarthas. The prime duty is to give up this pratiṣṭhā, which is compared to stool. What to speak of touching this pratiṣṭhā, do not look at it, even from a distance! For one who chants the name of Śrī Hari in the morning, noon, evening and midnight, no other sādhana is needed.

एकान्त भक्तेर मात्र कीर्तन-स्मरण
अन्य पर्वे रुचि नाहि हय प्रवर्तन

ekānta bhaktera mātra kīrtana-smaraṇa
anya parve ruci nāhi haya pravartana

भावेर सहित हय श्री-कृष्ण-सेवन
स्वारसिकी-भाव क्रमे हय उद्दीपन

bhāvera sahita haya śrī-kṛṣṇa-sevana
svārasikī-bhāva krame haya uddīpana

एकान्त भक्तेर क्रिया-मुद्रा-रागोदित
तथापि से सब नहे विधि-विपरीत

ekānta bhaktera kriyā-mudrā-rāgodita
tathāpi se saba nahe vidhi-viparīta

सर्व-त्याग करिलेओ छाडा सुकठिन
प्रतिष्ठाशा त्यागे यत्न पाइबे प्रवीण

sarva-tyāga karileo chāḍā sukaṭhina
pratiṣṭhāśā tyāge yatna pāibe pravīṇa

प्रभाते गभीर रात्रे मध्याह्ने सन्ध्याय
अनर्थ छाडिया लओ नामेर आश्रय

prabhāte gabhīra rātre madhyāhne sandhyāya
anartha chāḍiyā lao nāmera āśraya

एइ-रूपे कीर्तन स्मरण येइ करे
कृष्ण-कृपा हय शीघ्र, अनायासे तरे

ei-rūpe kīrtana smaraṇa yei kare
kṛṣṇa-kṛpā haya śīghra, anāyāse tare

श्रद्धा करि साधु-सङ्गे कृष्ण-नाम लय
अनर्थ सकल याय निष्ठा उपजय

śraddhā kari sādhu-saṅge kṛṣṇa-nāma laya
anartha sakala yāya niṣṭhā upajaya

प्रातः-काले नित्य-लीला करिबे चिन्तन
चिन्तिते चिन्तिते भावेर हैबे साधन

prātaḥ-kāle nitya-līlā karibe cintana
cintite cintite bhāvera haibe sādhana
