The Sulbasutras are considered Vedic appendices and deals with the ancient Indian science of Mathematics and Geometry, by instructing the construction of fire-altars, among others. pādeṣṭakākṣiḥ saṅkhyāṃ pūrayet || Sūtra _11.11a ||

iha pādeṣṭakāśabdena puruṣasya pūrayitavyasya caturbhāgakārikā aṇūkā gṛhyante / pañcamabhāgīyāś ca kṛtā upadheyā ityucyante / dvādaśa caturbhāgīyā ātmani / prathamā rītiḥ pañcamabhāgīyānām / dvitīyā rītiścaturbhāgīyānām / ṣaṣṭhī prādeśānām / navamī caturbhāgīyānām / śiṣṭe pañcamabhāgīyāḥ / eṣa prastāro dviśataḥ / atra kecana yājñikāḥ anupāśitaguravaḥ ācāryābhiprāyamajānantaḥ ūnāddūya(hya)dhikaprastāraṃ kurvanti / asya tu sūtrakārasya pratiprastāraṃ pūrayediti vadatastadanabhipretameva / yadyevamabhimatamabhaviṣyat sarvatra pratiprastāraṃ saṃkhyāṃ pūrayediti nāvakṣyat / uktaṃ ca; tasmāddviśataḥ prastāraḥ

atra navapañcamabhāgīyārītīnāṃ madhyasthāmekāṃ pañcamabhāgīyārītimuddhṛtya madhye viṃśatiprādeśeṣṭakā udīcīrupadadhyāt / atra catuḥsaṃkhyātiricyate / atireke adhikapramāṇopadhānena saṃkhyāpūraṇasyānyāyyatvādaṇūkāḥ pañcamabhāgīyānāṃ sthāna iti paribhāṣayāṇūkopadhānena saṃkhyāpūraṇasya nyāyyatvācca / tataḥ prādeśarotyā pūrvarītiḥ yathā saṃśliṣṭā bhavati tathā kṛtvā pūrvāntarītimuddhṛtya tatrāṣṭāvaṇūkā upadadhyāt / evaṃ prādeśarītyāḥ paritastisro rītīḥ pracyāvya dvitīyāṃ rītimuddhtyāṣṭāvaṇūkā upadadhyāt / evaṃ dviśataḥ prastāraḥ / atra kecita -- prathame prastāre pucchāgre daśaprādeśānupadhāya pādeṣṭakāśvānādṛtya pañcadaśabhāgīyābhiḥsaṃkhyāṃ pūrayanti / bhedamapi sahante /

prathame'pi prathame'pi prastāre sandhyantarāle'ṇūkāstatpādāśvopadadhāti /
tathopadhāne prayojanaṃ mṛgyam /
kecitu pracchādanakāle saṃkhyāpūrakāṇāṃ sthānamavaśiṣya pracchādya saṃkhyāpūrakā upadadhati /
tatra tu sūtrāñjasyamasti naveti cintyam //

ūrvarsthiśabdasaṃyuktā śrutirmukhyātra kṛtā / ācāryeṇaiva sūtrāṇāṃ ṣaḍbhāgīyā kṛte tu / ākyātamarthaṃ cācāryaistathorvasthīti sūtritam / ṣaḍbhāgīyāpadaṃ taddvadapyanyaiḥsūtrritaṃ paraiḥ / hiraṇyakeśināṃ śulbe tathorvasthīti sūtritam / vyākhyātāro'pi tatraitat ṣaḍbhīgāyāparaṃ viduḥ / bodhāyanaś ca bhagavān same tu caturaśrake / turyapañcamaṣaṣṭhaiś ca sapādaiḥ karaṇaṃ vyadhāt / urvasthināmadheyānāmupadeśabalādiha / pracchāditānāmābhistadbādhaḥsūtrakṛteṣṭate / aratnayo'pyaṇūkāś ca chādane syurviparyayāt / pūrvasminnaparasmiṃś ca prastāre saṃbhavo na hi / na pañcadaśabhāgīyā śrūyate tra dvitīyake / śrūyante tāstu pūrvāgnau na tatpūrvo dvitīyakaḥ / prakṛtitvāddvayoragnayoḥ nityatvācca dvayorapi / atastāsaṃ dvitīye'gnau kathaṃ prāptirvimṛśyatām / kintu tāsāṃ tu yatkāryaṃ tatrāṇūkāstu bodhitāḥ / prathamāgnerato'nyatra tatsthāne syuraṇūkikāḥ /

ye tvatra pañcadaśabhāgīyābhiḥsaṃkhyāpūraṇaṃ kurvanti te kimupadeśato prāptaṃ manvate? atideśato ? ubhayathāpi na yujyate /
dvayoḥ prakṛtitvāt prakṛtivikārābhāvācca /
nanvaṇūkāḥ pañcadaśabhāgīyānāṃ sthāna iti vacanasāmarthyāttāsāṃ prāptirbhaviṣyati //

it.i cenna; pañcadaśabhāgīyānāṃ sthāna iti vacanaṃ tatkārye saṃkhyāpūraṇo'ṇkānāṃ prāpakam / na tu saṃkhyāpūraṇamātre tāsāmapyu padhāyakam / tasmāccintyamidam / sathamarthamidamācāryeṇoktaṃ? ucyate -- upadhīyamānānāmiṣṭakānāṃ saṃkhyāyāḥsthāne / na ca prastārai saṃkhyāsampattau yadiṣṭakābhedādavayavabhedaḥsyāt sa marṣaṇīya iti manyamānenoktam / tadetaddvitīyaśyene pratipādayiṣyate / kecittu yājñikā nyūnādhikaprastāramagnau kurvanti samudāye saṃkhyāsampattiṃ manyamānāḥ / tadayuktam / pañcadaśaprabhṛtibhiḥ prastāreḥ sahasrādi saṃkhyāyāṃ sampādyamānāyāṃ viśeṣāśravaṇe "samaṃ syādaśrutatvāt' iti prastārāṇāṃ dviśatatvasyaiva nyāyyatvāt / rathacakrāgnau tasya karaṇyā dvādaśenetyādinā dviśatānāmevotpādanācca / nanu yatra yatra prastāre pūrayediti vacanāntaramasti tatra prastāre saṃkhyāpūraṇamastu / tadyatra nāsti tatra samudāyasaṃkhyā pūraṇasaṃkhyā itarathā pūraṇavacanasyānarthakyaprasaṅgāt / ucyate -- na tatrānarthakyaprasaṅgaḥ / kathaṃ? tatra hi nyāyaprāptaṃ saṃkhyāpūraṇaṃ tatsādhanatvena pañcadaśabhāgīyānāṃ vidhānāt / yadi sarve prastārā dviśatāḥ kimarthameṣa dviśata prastāra ityucyate? siddhe satyārambhamātroddeśena sarveṣāṃ prastārāṇāṃ dviśatatvasampādanārtham / yathaikavidhaprastāro dviśataḥ evamanye'pi sarve prastārā dviśatasaṃkhyāḥ kāryāḥ / pūraṇavacanā bhāve'pīti nyāyaprāptamevārthaṃ anuvādena draḍhayitumayaṃ yatnaḥ / tasmātsarve prastārā dviśatāḥ kāryā iti na nyūnādhikā iti siddhaṃ sarvaprastārāṇāṃ dviśatatvam / prakṛtibhūtaḥsaptavidha uktaḥ / idānīṃ nityā vikṛtaya ucyante -- ekavidheti / ekavidhādīnāṃ ṣaḍvidhaparyantānāṃ ṣaṇṇāmagnīnāṃ tasyatasyāgneḥ karaṇīnāṃ dvādaśabhāgena trayodaśabhāgena ca iṣṭakāḥ kārayet / atraikavidhasya karaṇī śataṃ viṃśatiḥ (120) aṅgulayaḥ / dvividhasya ekonasaptatiśataṃ aṅgulayaḥ catuviṃśatitilāś ca / (169 2 / 3 4 / 4) trividhasya dve śate sapta ṅgulayaḥ ekonatriṃśattilāś ca (207 2 / 3 9 / 4) caturvidhasya dve śate catvāriṃśaccāṅgulayaḥ (240) pañcavidhasya dve śate ṣaṣṭhiraṅgulayaḥ ekādaśa tilāś ca (260 1 / 3 1 / 4) ṣaḍvidhasya dve śate trinavatiraṅgulayaḥ ekatriṃśattilāś ca (293 3 / 3 1 / 4) / etāsāṃ karaṇīnāṃ sarvato dvādaśenaikaṃ karaṇam / sarvatastrayodaśenaikaṃ karaṇam / tayoḥ pādeṣṭakānāṃ karaṇaṃ cakārādardheṣṭakānāmapi ṣaḍvidhaṃ navavidhaṃ karaṇam / upadhānamucyate -- abhitaḥ pādāstisro rītyo dvādaśyaḥ / tataḥ pañcarītyastrayodaśyaḥ / tata ekā trayodaśīpādāḥ / tata ekā trayodaśyaḥ / tatastisro'bhitaḥ pādā dvādaśyaḥ iti trayodaśa rītyaḥ / tatra dvitīyāyāṃ rītyāṃ dvādaśyāṃ caturthīmaṣṭamīṃ ceṣṭakāmuddhṛtya dvedver'dheṣṭake upadadhyāt / tatraiva copāntye uddhṛtya catasror'dheṣṭakāḥ / dviśata eva prastāraḥ / dvitīye prastāre dve rītyau trayodaśyaḥ / tata ekā 6yodaśīpādā / tata ekābhitaḥ pādā trayodaśyaḥ / tataścatasro rītyo dvādaśyaḥ / tata ekābhitaḥ pādā dvādaśyaḥ / tatastisro rītyastrayodaśyaḥ iti trayodaśa rītyaḥ / atra madhyamāyāṃ ṣaḍuddhṛtya pādā upadadhyāt / prastāro dviśataḥ / athavā prathamaprastāre dvādaśabhiḥ dvitīyastrayodaśabhistathocyate / kṛtsnadvādaśī pakṣe dīrghā pādeṣṭakā ardheṣṭakāś ca tatratatra prathamaprastāre prācyaḥsaptadaśa rītayaḥ / tāḥsarvā dvādaśeṣṭakāḥ / tāsāṃ sarvāsāṃ dakṣiṇā ardheṣṭakābhiḥ / tata ekā pādābhistatastisro dvādaśībhistata ekā pādābhistata ekārdhābhiḥ / tata ekā pādābhistatastisro dvādaśībhiḥ / antyārdhābhirevaṃ saptadaśa rītayaḥ / tatra ṣañcamīṣaṣṭhīsaptamīnāṃ rītīnāmantyāstisra uddhṛtya ekāṃ dvādaśīmupadadhyāt / athaikādaśī dvādaśī trayodaśīnāmantyāḥ tisra uddhṛtya ekādaśīmupadadhyāt / evaṃ dviśataḥ / yaddvitīyaṃ trayodaśabhirudīcyo rītayaścaturdaśa tāsāṃ prathamārdhābhirdvādaśītrayodaśībhirantyārdhābhiḥ tāścaturdaśa rītayaḥ / evaṃ dvādaśa śatamiṣṭakāḥ / tatra pūrvārdhe trayodaśīḥ ṣaḍuddhṛtya caturviṃśatiṃ pādā upadadhyāt / evaṃ dviśataḥ / yadi sarve prastārā dvādaśībhiḥ tadā pūrvoktaprakāreṇa prathamaṃ prastāramupadhāya dvitīyaprastārata eva rītīrudīcīrupadadhyāt / eṣa dviśataḥ / yadi sarve trayodaśībhiḥ, tadā dvitīyaprastāroktā rītiḥ prathame prastāre prācīrupadhāya paścārdhe trayodaśīruddhṛtya pādā upadhāyāparasmin prastāre udīcīrupadadhyāt / eṣa dviśataḥ / yadyekatra trayodaśānyato dvādaśa tadā prāgāyatā iṣṭakā udīcyaḥ trayodaśa rītayaḥ / tāḥṣaṭpañcāśacchataṃ ca pūrvasyāṃ rītyāṃ pañcamyāṃ cāṣṭāvaṣṭāvuddhṛtyāṣṭāviṃśatiṃ pādāḥ dve dve cārdhe / evaṃ dviśataṃ /

dvitīye prastāre eva prācyo rītayaḥ /
yatra dakṣiṇataḥ uttarataśvāṣṭāvaṣṭāvuddhṛtya pūrvavat pādā ardhāśvopadadhyādevaṃ dviśataḥ /
evameva praugādiṣvapi karaṇāni dvādaśabhāgīyābhistrayodaśabhāgīyābhirvā yathāyogamupadhāya pādeṣṭakābhirardheṣṭakābhiś ca saṃkhyāṃ pūrayet /
