The Sanskrit edition of the Apastamba Sulba-sutra with the commentaries of Kapardin, Karavinda and Sundararaja. The Sulbasutras are considered Vedic appendices and deals with the ancient Indian science of Mathematics and Geometry, by instructing the construction of fire-altars, among others. gārhapatyāhavanīyayor antarālaṃ pañcadhā ṣaḍdhā saṃvibhajya ṣaṣṭhaṃ saptamaṃ bhāgam āgantum upasamasya samaṃ traidhaṃ vibhajyāparasmiṃs tṛtīye lakṣaṇaṃ kṛtvā gārhapatyāhavanīyayor antau niyamya lakṣaṇena dakṣiṇāpāyamya nimittaṃ karoti tad dakṣiṇāgner āyatanam | śrutisāmarthyāt || ĀpŚus_4.4 ||

gārhapatyāhavanīyayorantarālaṃ pañcadhā vibhajya ṣaḍdhā vibhajyetyanvayaḥ / yadi pañcadhā tadā ṣaṣṭho bhāga āgantuḥ / ṣaṣṭhaṃ saptamaṃ bhāgaṃ āgantumupasamasya samaṃ traidhaṃ vibhajya / yadi ṣoḍhā tadā saptamo bhāgaḥ āgantiḥ / tamupasamasya saṃyojya, samaṃ traidhaṃ vibhajya; āgantunā saha viṣamaṃ mābhūditi samagrahaṇam / aparasmiṃstṛtīye lakṣaṇaṃ kṛtvā gārhapatyāvahanīyayorantau niyamya pāśau pratimucya lakṣaṇena dakṣiṇāpāyamya śaṅkaṃ nihanyāt / dakṣiṇāgnisthānaṃ śrutisāmarthyāt / sāmarthyamabhidhānaśaktiḥ asyāḥśruterayamevārthaṃ iti / tena gārhapatyāhavanīya yorantarālaṃ, triprathamavistārāyāmāni trīṇi caturaśrāṇi kṛtvāparasmin caturaśre uttarasyāṃ śroṇyāṃ gārhapatyaṃ dakṣiṇeṃ'sedakṣiṇāgnayāyatanaṃ pūrvasmin caturaśre, uttareṃsa āhavanīyamityevamādayo nirastā bhavanti / sarvatrāgnayāyatanāni caturaśrāṇi maṇḍalāni / iha tu maṇḍalaṃ gārhapatyamardhamaṇḍalākāramanvāhāryapacanaṃ / caturaśramāhavanīyamiti smaranti maṇḍalacaturaśrayorukto vidhiḥ / idānīṃ dakṣiṇāgneḥ dhanurākāra ucyate--piśīladvikaraṇyā caturaśraṃ kṛtvā pūrvoktena vidhānena maṇḍalaṃ kuryāt / tasya maṇḍalasya viṣkambhacaturbhāgaṃ dakṣiṇāgneḥ pūrvanihatācchaṅkorudagapasārya śaṅkaṃ nihatya tasminpāśaṃ pratimucya viṣkambhārdhena maṇḍalaṃ parilikhyottaramardhaṃ tyajet / tatra ślokau bhavataḥ----

dakṣiṇāgnerhatācchaṅkorudakchaṅkurdaśāṅgule /
ekādaśatilairūne kāryasya dhanuṣā samaḥ //
tasminpāśaṃ pratimucya viṃśatyāyatayā likhet /
ūnayā tu dvāviṃśatitilairardhaṃ tyajedudak //

etasya viharaṇamāha--

gārhapatyāhavanīyayorantarālamaṣṭaprakramādikaṃ dañcadhā ṣoḍhā saṃbhujya guṇayitvā ṣaṣṭhaṃ saptamaṃ bhāgamāgantumupasamas pañcadhā guṇane ṣaṣṭhaṃ ṣoḍhā guṇane bhāgamumasamasya saṃyojyāgantun tṛtīye gārhapatyasannihite tṛtīye lakṣaṇaṃ nirañjanaṃ kṛtvā gārhapatyāhavanīyayorantau niyamya rajjvantau pāśau gārhapatyasya pūrvaśaṅkau paścimaṃ pāśamāhavanīyasya paścimaśaṅkau pūrvaṃ pāśe pratimucya lakṣaṇena dakṣiṇāpāyamya nimittaṃ cihnaṃ tatra kuryāt / tannimittaṃ dhanurākṛterdakṣiṇāgnermadhyamaṃ, viśeṣāśravaṇāt / gārhapatyāhavanīyayormadhyamaśaṅkvorantau niyamyeti kecit / śrutisāmarthyāt / "dakṣiṇataḥ purastāt' ityādi śrutibalādityarthaḥ / atra pañcadhāpakṣe gārhapatyāhavanīyayorantarālasya dakṣiṇāgnayāyatanamadhyopakrāntāddakṣiṇottaralambāt paścimo bhāga ekatriṃśadaṅgulayaḥ tribhāgonasaptatilāś ca / pūrvabhāgo'ṣṭāviṃśatiraṅgulayaḥ tribhāgādhikasaptaviṃśatitilāś ca / lambakaḥ ṣaṭtriṃśadaṅgulayaḥ pādonaṣoḍaśatilāś ca / ṣaḍdhāpakṣe dvātriṃśadaṅgulayaḥ sārdhasaptaviṃśatitilāś ca pūrvabhāgaḥ / lambakastriṃśadaṅgulayaḥ saptatilāś ca / pādāṣṭakamite'ntarālavat prakramite ekādaśādiṣu ca bhāgayorlambakasya pramāṇamunneyaṃ, unnayanaprakāraṃ cātraiva vakṣyāmaḥ / atrāpyāyatanāni piśīlamātrāṇi, athavā asyaiṣa dhiṣṇyo līyata iti prājahitasyāpi dhiṣṇyatvadarśanādāyatanānāṃ caturaśramaṇḍalatvayoraniyamena prāptayorapi maṇḍajalameva gārhapatyāyatanaṃ agnanayo vai trayī vidyetyatrānuvākaparyāye tasya pṛthivīstuteḥ tadākāratvāccatasyāḥ ardhamaṇḍalākāraṃ dhanurākāraṃ dakṣiṇāgnayāyatanaṃ, tatraivāntarīkṣastuteḥ tadākāratvācca nabhasaścaturaśramāhavanīyam, tatraiva dyulokastuteḥ caturaśramaindrasthānamiti śāstrāntare darśanācca sabhyāvasathyayorapi caturaśrameva, tayostaddvikāratvāt / atra yogaḥ gārhapatyāyatane piśīlamātraṃ caturaśraṃ vihṛtya maṇḍalaṃ kuryāddakṣiṇāgnerapi vacanāt, viśīladvikaraṇyā caturaśraṃ vihṛtya maṇḍalakṭitya maṇḍalaviṣkambhacaturbhāgena dakṣiṇāgnanayāyatanaṃ tannimittāduttarataḥśaṅkuṃ nihatya tatra śaṅkau tadviṣkambhamadhyaṃ niyamyāntau samau kṛtvā maṇḍalaṃ vilikhya maṇḍaladhye prācīṃ lekhāṃ vilikhya udagardhaṃ tyajet / dakṣiṇārdha āyatanaṃ gārhapatyasya purastādaṣṭaprakramādīnatītya piśīlamātraṃ caturaśramāhavanīyaṃ kuryāt tatpurastāt sañcaramavaśiṣya āhavanīyavat sabhyaṃ tatpurastādāvasathyamapi / tadvat piśīlapramāṇaṃ ca / dviprādeśaṃ piśīlam / muṣṭikṛto'ratniḥ piśīlamityeke / bāhvorantarālaṃ piśīlamityeka iti kecit / prakramyata iti pakrama iti padasyāpi prakramatāmicchanti / tathāpi labhyate, ayamatra vimānakramaḥ--gārhapatyāhavanīyadhiṣṇiyau vimāya gārhapatyāhavanīyayorantarālamityādi dakṣiṇāpāyamya niyamya nimittaṃ kṛtvā tenaiva lakṣaṇenottarataś ca nimittaṃ viparyasya dakṣiṇata uttarataś ca nimittaṃ kṛtvā piśīladvikaraṇīcaturaśramaṇḍalīvaṣkambhacaturthāṃśena dakṣiṇayornimittayorudakkṛtanimittadvayānukūlyena śaṅkuṃ nikhanet / anayoḥ paścimaśaṅkau piśīladvikaraṇī caturaśramaṇḍalaviṣkambhārdhena maṇḍalamālikhya purvaśaṅkvānukūlyena prācīṃ jñātvā maṇḍalasyottarārdhaṃ tyajet / dakṣiṇārdho dakṣiṇāgnidhiṣṇiyo bhavati /

tatkathaṃ grāhyamityata āha----

samaṃ sarvaṃ, gārhapatyāhavanīyayoḥ gārhapatyasya paurastye śaṅkau āhavanīyasya pāśvātye śaṅkau ca dakṣiṇato dakṣiṇāgnayāyatanam / tadāyatanamadhyamityanye /

tasmin, pakṣe gārhapatyāhavanīyayorāpi madhyayoreva grahaṇam /
sarvāṇyevāgrayāyatanāni piśīlamātrāṇi caturaśrāṇi parimaṇḍalāni dhiṣṇiyatvānmaṇḍalaṃ gārhapatyasya /
ardhamaṇḍalaṃ dakṣiṇāgneścaturaśramāhavanīyasyetyaitihāsikāḥsarvāṇi cāyatanāni kṣetratastulyānītyāhuḥ /
tatrokto maṇḍalavidhiḥ āhavanīyasyākṣṇayārajjvā caturaśraṃ vihṛtya vidhānena maṇḍalaṃ kṛtvā uttarārvaṃ jahyāttaddakṣiṇāgnayāyatanam //
