The Sanskrit edition of the Apastamba Grihya-sutra with the commentaries of Haradatta (called the Anakula-vritti) and Sudarshana (called the Grihyatatparyadarshana-vyakhya). The Apastamba Grihyasutra is a short treatise on Vedic rituals which, together with the Hiranyakeshin-grihya-sutra, belongs to the Taittiriya School of the Black Yajur-Veda. māsiśrāddhavadanvaṣṭakā kartavyetyarthaḥ /kalpātideśāt dravyadevatādi sarvamiha prāpyate /
'tatrānnasyottarābhirjuhotī'tyatra māṃsasaṃsṛṣṭasyānnasya homamicchanti /
aṣṭakāyāṃ darśanāt /
iha ca yathārtha māṃsamiti vacanāt /
anye māsiśrāddhātideśādannasyāva homamicchanti /
yatraiva tu kārye māsi śrāddhe māṃsaṃ ihāpi tatraiveti /
atra kecit-dadhyañjalipakṣe'pyanvaṣṭakāmicchanti /
madhye tasya vidhānāt /
yadi hyasāvanvaṣṭatāyā api pratyāmnāyaḥ syāt tāmapyabhidhāya vaktavyaṃ syāditi /
ata eva yathārtha māṃsaṃ śiṣṭvā śvobhūte'nvaṣṭakā tasyā māsi śrāddhena kalpo vyākhyātaḥ iti pūrvatra sambandhaḥ //
athaikoddiṣṭavidhiḥ śāstrāntarāt /
pretamekamuddisya yacchrāddhaṃ kriyate tadekoddiṣṭam /
ayugmā brāhmaṇāḥ ekaḥ trayaḥ pañceti /
vṛdhyā phalabhūyastvam /
tatra nāgnau karaṇaṃ, nābhiśrāvaṇaṃ, na pūrva nimantraṇaṃ, na daivaṃ, na dhūpo, na dīpo, na svadhā, na namaskāraḥ, udaṅmukhāḥ brāhmaṇāḥ /
sarvasmādannātsakṛtsakṛdavadāya dakṣiṇato bhasmamiśrānaṅgārānnirūhya teṣveva juhuyāt pretāyāmuṣmai yamāya ca svāheti /
pretāyeti vacanaṃ pretasya nāmanirdeśārtham yajñaśarmaṇe yamāya ca svāheti prayogamicchanti /
yajñaśarmaṇe pretāya yamāya cetyanye /
amuṣmai tṛptirastviti apāṃ pratigrahaṇaṃ visarjanaṃ cā asti tṛptiriti prativacanam /
amuṣmā upatiṣṭhatvityanudeśanaṃ, āśayeṣu ca piṃḍhadānaṃ bhojanasthāna ityarthaḥ /
tṛpyasveti saṃkṣālanam /
etadekoddiṣṭaṃ sarvavarṇānāṃ svāśaucānte prasiddham //
athānyāni navaśrāddhamāsikāni traipakṣikaṃ ṣāṇmāsikaṃ sāmvatsarikamiti /
yatprathamaṃ kriyate tannavaśrāddham /
navaṃ ca tacchrāddhañceti kṛtvā /
tasya varṇānupūrveṇa kālaḥ
caturthe pañcame caiva navamaikādaśe tathā /
yadatra dīyate jantoḥ tannavaśrāddhamucyate //

sarveṣāmapi varṇānāṃ catvāryapi navaśrāddhānītyanye /
toṣāṃ dvitīyādiṣu navaśabdo ghaṭate /
māsikāni dvādaśa pratimāsaṃ mṛtāhe kartavyāni /
ādyaṃ tu svāśocante /
antyaṃ ca sapiṇḍīkaraṇena saha mṛtāha eva trāpakṣikaṃ ṣāṇmāsikaṃ dvitīyādiṣu samvatsareṣu pratisamvatsaraṃ mṛtāha eva sāmvatsarikamiti ṣoḍaśaitānyekoddiṣṭāni /
sāmvatsarike ca kṣetrajajārajayoḥ ekoddiṣṭakalpasya ca vikalpaḥ /
itareṣāmekoddiṣṭameva /
ye navaśrāddhānāṃ samuccayamicchanti teṣāṃ ṣoḍaśaikoddiṣṭānītyeṣāpi prasiddhirdurupapādā /
atra paṭhanti--
nityaśrāddhaṃ māsi māsi aparyāptāvṛttuṃ prati /
dvādaśāhena vā bhojyā ekāhe dvādaśāpi vā //
atha sapiṇḍīkaraṇaṃ samvatsara ekādaśe caturthe tṛtīye vā māsi tripakṣe ardhamāse dvādaśe vāhani upanayanābhyudayaprāptau vā /
tatra ekoddiṣṭasya māsiśrāddhasya ca samuccayaḥ /
pretasyaikoddiṣṭaṃ tasya ye ptrādayaḥ tebhyo māsiśrāddhaṃ mantreṣu ca na kścidvikāraḥ /
yanme mātetyādiṣu yathaiva te pitrā pretena pūrva prayuktāstathāva putreṇāpi prayoktavyāḥ /
putrādanyasya ca sapiṇḍīkaraṇe nādhikāraḥ, māsiśrāddhābhāvāt /
sapiṇḍīkaraṇāsya ca māsiśrāddhaprayogavikāratvāt /
tasmādaputrasya pretasya bhāryā yāvajjīvamekoddiṣṭakalpenaiva patye māsiśrāddhaṃ dadāti /
putro'pyakṛtavivāha evameva /
vivāhādūrdhva yadā māsiśrāddhamārabhate tadā pituḥ sapiṇḍīkaraṇena sahārabhate /
anye tvetadanuṣṭhānaṃ anyathāpi bhavati /
tatra pitre pretāya pūrvavadbhasmani homaḥ itarebhyo'nnādājyācca māsiśrāddhavat /
piṇḍadāne-māsiśrāddhavatpiṇḍān datvā tatsamīpe pṛthak stīrṇeṣu darbheṣu pretāya piṇḍaḥ /
pūrvavadapo datvā tasyānte arghyārdha pitṛpātreṣu pretapātraṃ prasecayet'ye samāmā'iti dvābhyāṃ piṇḍaṃ piṇḍeṣu saṃsṛjet /
etatsapiṇḍīkaraṇam /
etasminkṛte pretaḥ pitṛtvamāpadyate /
caturthaścānujñāpita utsṛṣṭo bhavati /
atra vipratipttiḥ- kecitprapitāmahasya pātraṃ piṇḍaṃ cetareṣu saṃsṛjanti /
pretaśabdena sa evocyate prakarṣeṇa itaḥ preta iti /
sa hyatrānujñāto bhavati /
prasiddhastvācāraḥ yasya sapiṇḍīkaraṇaṃ sa pretaḥ, tasyaiva ca pātrapiṇḍayoritareṣu saṃsargaḥ /
evamapi prapitāmahasyaivānujñeti /
mātṛsapiṇḍīkaraṇe sā yadi putrikā, āsurādivivāhoḍhā vā tato mātāmahādīnāṃ piṇḍeṣu saṃsargaḥ /
tatpiṇḍasyetaratra śvaśtvādi piṇḍena ekācityārūḍhāyāstu bhartṛpiṇḍeneti kecidvyavasthāpayanti /
prayogastu pirasiddhācārānurodhena kartavyaḥ /
atra kecitpaṭhanti --
bhrātā vā bhrātṛputro vā sapiṇḍaḥ śṣya eva vā /
sahapiṇḍakriyāḥ kṛtvā kuryādabhyudayaṃ tataḥ //

tathā--
aputrāyāṃ mṛtāyāṃ tu patiḥ kuryātsapiṇḍatāmiti //
atha nāmdīśrāddham- tatra bodhāyanaḥ -athābhyudayikeṣu pradakṣiṇamupacāro yajñopavītaṃ prāgagrān darbhān, yugmān brāhmaṇān, yavaistilārthaḥ, pṛṣadājyaṃ haviḥ /
sopayāmena pātreṇa nāndīmukhāḥ pitaraḥ prīyantāmityapāṃ pratigrahaṇaṃ, saṃsarjanaṃ ca /
nāndīmukhebhyaḥ pitṛbhyaḥ svāhetyagnaukaraṇamanudeśanaṃ ca /
āśayeṣu parisamūḍheṣu darbheṣu pṛṣadājyenānupradānaṃ nāndīmukhebhyaḥ pitṛbhyaḥ svadhā namaḥ iti sarva dvirdviriti (bau.gṛ.3-12-2....5)
tatraiva pradeśāntare"teṣu bhaktavatsu svadhāyai sthāne'madhu maniṣye madhu janiṣya'ityetadyajurjapitvā nāndīmukhāḥ pitaraḥ prīyantāmityapo ninayati svadhaivaiṣoktā bhavati /
naikenāhnā daivaṃ pitryaṃ ca kurvanti yasyaikāhnā pitryaṃ daivaṃ ca kurvanti prajā hāsya pramāyukā bhavati, tasmāt pitṛbhyaḥ pūrvedyuḥ kriyate, paredyurdevānāmiti /
(bau.gṛ.pa.1-3-10-11) tathā puṣpaphalākṣatamiśrairyavaiḥ tilārtha upalipya dadhyodanaṃ samaprakīryeti /
tatra māsiśrāddhaṃ sarveṣāṃ pitryāṇāṃ prakṛtiḥ /
asmākaṃ viśeṣāstu śāstrāntarādāgamayitavyāḥ /
tena'pūrvedyurnivedana'mityādi sarvamihāpi bhavati /
yugmā brāhmaṇāḥ aṣṭau ṣoḍaśa vā /
yadyuṣṭau dvau devebheyaḥ pitṛbhyo dvau dvau /
yadi ṣoḍaśa devebhyaścatvāro dvādaśa pitṛbhya ityādi /
yavaistilārthaḥ māsiśrāddho yat tilakṛtyamarghyādiṣu tadatra yavaiḥ kartavyaḥ /
puṣpādibhiśca miśraṇama, pradeśāntare vacanāt /
pṛṣadājyaṃ haviḥ /
rmāsaudanavatpṛṣadājyamiśramityeke, kevalamevetyanye /
sopayāmeneti yenārghya pradīyate tatpātramanyena pātreṇopayamyetyarthaḥ /
nāndīmukhāḥ prīyantāmiti devebhyastu viśvedevāḥ prīyantāmiti /
tatra pitṝṇāmekapātraṃ, na trīṇi;pitṛpitāmahaprapitāmahaviśeṣasyānupadeśāt, sarveṣu mantreṣu nāndīmukhāḥ pitara ityupadeśāt /
tasmādekameva pātraṃ pitṝṇāṃ, devānāṃ caikam /
tatra brāhmaṇānupaveśyāgneḥ pratiṣṭhāpanaṃ arghyapātrayośca /
agniścaupāsana eva /
vivāheṣvasaṃbhavāt /
arghya pradāya gandhādibhiścālaṅkṛtyānujñāto haviruddhṛtya pṛṣadājyena saṃsṛjyābhighāryājyabhāgānte nāndīmukhebhyaḥ pitṛbhyaḥ svāhetyekāṃ pradhānāhudīṃ juhoti kevalena pṛṣadājyena sauviṣṭakṛtaṃ dvitīyaṃ juhuyāditi /
tantraśeṣaṃ samāpya klaptānvā pratipūruṣamiti nyāyenānena nāndīmukhebhyaḥ pitṛbhyaḥ svāhetyanena mantreṇa pitṛbhyo'nudiśati, devebhyastu vuśvebhyo devebhyaḥ svāheti /
māsiśrāddhe ye homamantrāḥ
anudeśanamantrāśca teṣāṃ nivṛttiḥ /
upasparśanaṃ tu bhavatyeva pratyāmnāyābhāvāt /
pṛthivīte pātramityāśayeṣu ca parisamūḍheṣviti āśayeṣu bhojanasthāneṣu parisamūḍheṣu parisamūhanena śodhiteṣu pṛṣadājyamiśreṇa baviṣā pṛṣadājyenaiva tāvatpiṇḍasyānupradānaṃ nāndīmukhebhyaḥ svadhānama ityanena /
evaṃ sarva dvirdviriti /
āsanapradānādiṣu dvirdviḥ prayatnaḥ karttavya ityarthaḥ /
upalipya dadhyodanaṃ samprakīrya tate'ye agnidagdhā'ityasmin sthāne bhavati /
atha dakṣiṇāṃ datvā visarjanaṃ nāndīmukhāḥ pitaraḥ prīyantāmiti /
tata udapātrasamīpe madhu maniṣya iti yajurjapitvā visarjanamantrābhyāṃ barhiṣi pātre ninīyya nyubjamiti /
evametannāndīśrāddhaṃ tatra kartavyaṃ yatrāparedyurdevayajyānuṣṭhānam /
kecitvanyathā paṭhanti ca---
mātuśśrāddhaṃ tu pūrva syātpitṝṇāṃ tadanantaram /
tato mātāmahānāṃ tu vṛddhau śrāddhatrayaṃ viduḥ //
iti //
asmin pakṣe mātrādīnāṃ dvau dvau /
evaṃ pitrādīnāṃ, evaṃ mātāmahādīnāṃ, devārthedvāveti viṃśatirdvijāḥ /
tathā ca manunānyapare vākye darśitam--
prativeśyānuveśyau ca kalyāṇe viṃśatidvije iti /

yātrābhyudayaśrāddhaṃ bhavati tadviṃśatidvijaṃ kalyāṇaṃ bhavati /
punaśca paṭhaṃti--
puṃsi jātānnacaulopasnānapāṇigraheṣu ca /
agnyādhāne tathā some daśasvabhyudayassmṛtaḥ //

etāvadatra nānā yugmā brāhmaṇāḥ pradakṣiṇamupacāro yajñopavītaṃ yavāstilārta iti //12//
