The Sanskrit edition of the Apastamba Grihya-sutra with the commentaries of Haradatta (called the Anakula-vritti) and Sudarshana (called the Grihyatatparyadarshana-vyakhya). The Apastamba Grihyasutra is a short treatise on Vedic rituals which, together with the Hiranyakeshin-grihya-sutra, belongs to the Taittiriya School of the Black Yajur-Veda. tatastān bhuktavato'nuvrajya pradīkṣaṇīkṛtya pratyāvṛtya prācīnāvītī piṇḍapradānadeśe dakṣiṇāgrān darbhān

saṃstṛṇāti dvaidhaṃ dvayoḥ sthānayorasaṃbhinnānityarthaḥ /
tatra pitṛbhyaḥ purastāt stṛmāti, mātṛbhyaḥ paścāt /
tathā cāśvalāyanaḥ -karṣūṣveke dvayoṣṣaṭsu , pūrvāsu pitṛbyo dadyāt, aparāsu strībhyaḥ (āśva.gṛ.1-56,7,8) iti /
'dakṣiṇāgraiḥ pitryeṣu'(āpa.gṛ.14) ityasya paristaraṇīvaṣayatvādiha dakṣiṇīnītyuktam /
saṃstīrya teṣūttarairmantraiḥ'mārjayantāṃ mama pitara'ityādibhirapo dadāti /
pūrvavaditi vakṣyamāṇamantrāpyapakṛṣyante /

asāvityatra sarvatra nāmagrahaṇaṃ yathāliṅgam /
atrāpi pūrvavadityasya sabandhāt savyaṃ jānvācyāvācīnapāṇirityādi vidhānamihāpi bhavati /

'etadvāṃ tatau yajñaśarmaviṣṇuśarmāṇau ye ca yuvāmanu,'etadvāṃ pitāmahā'- vityādi /

mantrasamāmnāye'mārjantāṃ mama pitara ityete'iti mantrāṇāṃ punarādiṣṭatvāt'uttarairapo datvā'ityeva siddhe pūrvavadityatidśaḥ piṇḍapitṛyajñapratyavamarśanārthaḥ -piṇḍeṣu codakāñjaliṣu ca /
tata uttarairmantraiḥ tānupatiṣṭhate yathāliṅgaṃ'ye ca vo'treti pitṝn, yāśca ve'treti mātṝ;te ca vahantāmiti pitṛn, tāśca vahantāniti mātṝḥ, tṛpyaṃtu bhavta iti pitṝn, tṛpyaṃtu bhavatyaḥ iti mātṝḥ, tṛpyata tṛpyata tṛpyata ityubhayān /

tata uttarayarcā'putrān pautrānityetayātriḥ prasavyamudapātreṇa pimḍān pariṣiñcati . ubhayāstaparyantviti lṅgāt piṇḍānāṃ sahapariṣecanam /

udapātravacanaṃ hastena bhūditi /
prasavyavacanamanuvādaḥ prasavyaṃ triguṇībhūtamekameva pariṣecanaṃ santataṃ yathā syāt, na piṇḍapitṛyajñavat trīṇi pariṣecanāni pṛthagiti /
evaṃ pariṣicya tataḥ pātrāṇi yānyatra prakṛtāni trīṇyarghyapātrāṇi pariṣecanapātrāmudakumbhaḥ

yasmin piṇḍārthamannamuddhṛtaṃ tacceti tāni nyubjya nyāñci kṛtvā tata uttaraṃ yajuḥ'tṛpyata tṛpyata tṛpyate'tyetat anavānamanuchvasan tryavarārdhya māvartayati trirabhyāvṛttiḥ avarā mātrā yasyāvartanasya tat tryavarārdhyam /
yajurgrahaṇaṃ'tṛpyate'tyasya trirāvṛttasya paṭhitasyaikayajuṣṭvjñāpanārtham /

tasya trirāvṛttau navakṛtvo'bhyāvṛttirbhavati /
evamāvṛtya nyakkṛtāni pātrāni prokṣya dvadvamabhyudāharati udānayati /

'yajñopavītinā pradakṣiṇam'iti sāhacaryāt /
anuvrajane'pyanuvrajya pradakṣiṇīkṛtyeti pradakṣiṇasāhacaryāt /
tantreṇa caitadubhayaṃ, sambhavāt /

yadi tu kāraṇavaśāttantrābhāvaḥ, tadā pṛthakpṛthak /
atha pratyetya prācīnāvītī piṇḍadānadeśe dakṣiṇāgrān darbhān, dvaidhaṃ dveghā saṃstṛṇāti /

tatra purastātpitrādyartha, paścānmātrādyartham;āśvalāyane darśanāt, ācārācca /
tatasteṣu darbeṣūttaraiḥ'mārjayantāṃ mama mātaraḥ'ityādibhiśca yathārha dakṣiṇāpavargamapo datvā anantaramuttaraiḥ'etatte tatāsau'ityādibhiḥ'etatte mātasau'ityādibhiśca yathāliṅgaṃ trīṃstrīn dakṣiṇāpavargān piṇḍān dadāti /
piṇḍāśca hutaśeṣāt bhuktaśeṣācca samavadāya kartavyāḥ /

sāmānyavidhisiddhasyeha punarvacanaṃ, piṇḍadāna eva dakṣiṇāpavargaḥ'dvaidhaṃ darbāstaraṇeṣu tu paścimāpavarga iti jñāpanārtham, tathobhayeṣāṃ piṇḍānāṃ pratyekaṃ dakṣiṇāpavargasiddhyartha ca /
atha pūrvavat'mārjayantām'ityādibhirevāpo dadāti /

kecit-'teṣūttarairapo datvā uttarairdakṣiṇāpavargān piṇḍān datvā'ityetayorapi'pūrvavat'iti padamapakṛṣya triṣvapi sūtreṣu codyamānaṃ pūrvavat piṇḍapitṛyajñavatkartavyamiti vyācakṣate /
prayojanaṃ tu"trīnudakāñjalīnninayati"(āpa.śrau.1-8-10)'savyaṃ jānvācyāvācīnapāṇiḥ'(āpa.śrau.1-9-1) ityādividhānāmihāpi bhavatīti /
tanna;apakarṣasyaivāyuktatvāt, pūrvavadityasya piṇḍapitṛyajñavadityevaṃbuddhyanudayācca /

yadi tvācārabalāt'savyaṃ jānvācya'ityādīhāpi kartavyamevetyucyeta, tadā na kaściddoṣaḥ

athottaraiḥ'ye ca vo'tra'ityādibhiṣṣarḍrbhimantrairyathā kramaṃ yathāliṅgaṃ pitṝn tristrirupatiṣṭhate /
tṛpyatetyanena trirāvṛttena ubhayāṃstantreṇa /

kecit catvāro mantrāḥ na ṣaṭ /
tatra prathamo mantro'ye ca vo'tra'ityādiḥ'tāśca vahantām'ityantaḥ ubhayoṣāmupasthānārthaḥ /
'tṛpyantu bhavantaḥ'; iti pitṝṇām /
'tṛpyantu bhavatyaḥ'iti mātṝṇām /
'tṛpyata tṛpyata tṛpyata'ityubhayeṣāmiti //


tata uttarayā'putrānpautrān'ityetayā ubhayeṣāṃ piṇḍānyugapadudapātreṇa triḥ prasavyamavicchinnaṃ pariṣiñcati /
sāmānyavidhisiddhasya prasavyasyeha punarvacanaṃ pūrvatra"pradakṣiṇīkṛtya"iti vacanādihāpi prādakṣiṇyaṃ syāditi śaṅkānirāsārtham /
anantaraṃ pātrāṇi homārthāni piṇḍadānārthāni ca /

kecit-bhojanārthāni vodadānārthāni ca, na tu homārthānīti /

nyubjya adhobilāni kṛtvā /
tata uttaraṃ yajuḥ'tṛpyata tṛpyata tṛpyata'ityāmnānata evaṃ trirabhyastam /
anavānaṃ anucchvasan /
tryavarārdhya trirabhyāvṛttiravarā mātrā yasyāvartanasya tatttryavarārdhyam yathā bhavati tathāvartayati /
tataścāvamāyāmapi mātrāyāṃ tṛpyateti navakṛtvo'bhyāsitavyaṃ bhavati /
evamanavānaṃ yāvacchattyāvartya, tataḥ pātrāṇi nyagabhūtāni vaprokṣya, dvandvamabhyudāharati /
atrābhyupasargāduttaraṃ karma pratyudāharati /
teṣāṃ pātrāṇāṃ niriṣṭikadoṣo nāstīti bhāvaḥ atha śeṣasyānnasya grāsavarārdhya grāsāvarārdhyam /

uttareṇa yajuṣā'prāṇe niviṣṭaḥ'; ityanena prāśnīyāt /
etacca sarvatassarvebhyo'nnaśeṣebhyassamavadāya kāryam /

athātra sūtrāṇāmapūrṇatvādanyatassiddhānapi padārthānupasaṃhṛtya yathāpratibhāsaṃ prayoga utyate-pūrvedyussāyamaupāsanahomaṃ hutvā prācīnāvītī

kṛtaprāṇāyāmaḥ śvo māsiśrāddhaṃ kartāsmīti saṅkalpya śucitvādiguṇasampannebhyaḥ śvitrādidoṣavarjitebhyaḥ kṛtasāyamāhnikebhyo brāhmaṇebhyo nivedayet /
tatra prathamaṃ yajñopavītī bhūtvā'śvo māsiśrāddhaṃ bhavitā, tatra bhavadbhirviśvadevārthe kṣaṇaḥ kartavyaḥ'iti viśvadevārthebhyo brāhmaṇebhyo nivedayet /

atha teṣāṃ pādān kuṇḍeṣu sakūrcatileṣvavanijyācamayya, kṛsaratāmbūlādīni datvā abhyajya snānārtha prasthāpayet /

tatassvayaṃ ca snāto brāhmaṇa bhojanārthādannādanyenānnena vaiśvadevaṃ pañcamahāyajñāṃśca kuryāt /

tato'parāhṇeprācīnāvītī brāhmaṇān prakṣālitapāṇipādānācāntānāsaneṣūpaveśayati /
tatra viśvadevārthān prāṅmukhān prākkūleṣu darbheṣu pitrādyarthānudaṅmukhān dviguṇabhugneṣu dakṣiṇāgreṣu darbheṣu /
śrāddhāgāraṃ ca sucau deśe dakṣiṇāpravaṇe sarvataḥ pariśritamudagdvāraṃ ca bhavati /

tasyottarapūrvadeśe'gniraupāsanaḍa- /
agnedakṣiṇataḥ piṇḍapradānārtha sthaṇaḍilam /
tasya dakṣiṇataḥ ptrādyarthānāmāsanam /
paścāttu viśvedevārthānāmāsanam /
sthaṇḍileṣu yathāvakāśaṃ pitrādibhyasriṣu pātreṣu ekasmin śāstrāntaroktavidhinārghyārthamudakagrahaṇam /
viśvebhyo devebhyaśca yathāvidhi pātrāntare /
tāni gandhādibhirabhyarcya, darbheṣu sādayitvā darbhaiḥ pracchādyāthāsanagatānāṃ brāhmaṇānāṃ hasteṣu svasmātsvasmādudapātrātpātrāntareṇāpa ādāya'viśva devāḥ idaṃ vo arghya''pitṛpitāmahaprapitāmahāidaṃ vo arghya'iti vārghyāṇi dadāti /

idamevārghyadānaṃ śrāddhe svadhāninayanamudapātrānayanamiti cocyate /

tato gandhādibhirvāsobhiraṅgulīyakādibhiśca yathāvibhavaṃ brāhmaṇānāmabhyarcanam /
tatastān'uddhriyatāmagnau ca griyatām'iti pratibrūyuḥ /
'udīcyavṛttistvāsanagatānāṃ hasteṣūdapātrānayanam /
uddhriyatāmagnau ca kriyatā mityāmantrayate /
kāmamuddhiyatākāmamagnau ca kriyatāmityatisṛṣṭa uddharejjuhuyācca'(āpa.dha.2-17-17,18,19) iti dharmaśāstravacanāt /
etacchodapātrānayanaṃ uddhriyatāmityāmantraṇaṃ ca pākṣikam, bhāṣyakāreṇānuktatvāt, udhīcyavṛttirityasya samāsasya udhīcyānāṃ vṛttirudīcyeśu vṛttirityubhayathāpi vigrahābhyupagamācca /
atha brāhmaṇabhojanārthādannāt haviṣyamodanāpūpādikaṃ ekasmin pātre samuddhṛtya ahaviṣyaṃ kṣārādisaṃsṛṣṭamanyasmin pātre uddhṛtyātha haviṣyaṃ pratiṣṭhatamabhighār agnerupasamādhānādyagnimukhāntaṃ kṛtvā'yanme mātā'ityādibhistrayodaśa pradhānāhutīrhutvā sviṣṭakṛtaṃ ca tata udīcīnamuṣṇaṃ bhasmāpohya ahaviṣyaṃ svāhākāreṇa hutvātha'lepayoḥ'ityādi tantraśeṣaṃ samāpya tataḥ'eṣa te tata'ityādibhissarvamannamabhimṛśya atha pṛthakpṛthaktṛtīyamāmantraṇaṃ pūrvavadeva kṛtvā triṣvapi cāmantraṇeṣu'oṃ tathā'iti prativacanaṃ brāhmaṇānām /
tataḥ kartuḥ prārthan'iti /
tataḥ'prāpnavāni'ityaṅgīkāro bhoktṝṇām /

apare kramāntaramāhuḥ- vaiśvadevapañcamahāyajñānantaraṃ aparāhṇe prācīnāvītī agnerupasamādhānādi karoti /
tatra svadhāninayanapakṣe pātrasaṃsādanakāle svadhāpātrāṇāmapi sādanam /
praṇītāḥ praṇīya vidhivat svadhāgrahaṇam /
tato'brāhmaṇaṃ dakṣiṇato niṣādya'; ityādyagnimukhānte kṛtepādaprakṣālanādi /
uddhiyatāmityāmantrya, annamuddhtya pradhānahomādaya iti /
ihāpi pakṣe svadhāninayanaṃ pākṣikameva anye tu- māsiśrāddhe śāstrāntarānusārānmantravanniyamavadbhojanadeśasaṃskāraṃ, viśveṣāṃ devānāṃ cāvāhanaṃ, bhojayitvodvāsanaṃ cecchanti /
atra ca padārtheṣu krame ca śiṣṭācārādeva nirṇayaḥ, sūtrakārabhāṣyakārābhyāmanuktatvāt //


atha prakṛtamucyate-bhojanapātrakḷptānannaviśeṣān yathāsvaṃ brāhmaṇānupasparśayati'pṛthivī te pātraṃ, ityetayā'idaṃ viṣṇurvicakrame'ityetayā ca /

tasyāścānte'viṣṇo bavyaṃ rakṣasva'iti viśveṣāṃ devānāṃ,'viṣṇo kavyaṃ rakṣasva'iti pitrādīnām /
evaṃ sparśayitvātha bhojayet /
vibhave sati sarpirmāsādīni viśiṣṭāni dadyāt;abhāve tailaṃ śākamiti /
bhuñjānān brāhmaṇānāhavanīyārthena dhyāyet, pitrādīn devatātvena, annaṃ cāmṛtatvena, ātmānaṃ brahmatvena /
bhuñjaneṣu ca parāṅāvṛttya rākṣodhnān pitryān vaiṣṇavānanyāṃśca (kha.ga.pavitrān) pāvamānamantrān dharmaśāstramitihāsapurāṇāni cāmiśrāvayati /
tṛptāṃśca jñātvā madhumatīśśrāvayati,'akṣannamīmadanta'iti ca /
atha bhūmāvannaṃ (kha.ga---prakirati) parikirati--

ye agnidagdhā ye'nagnidagdhā ye jātāḥ kule mama /
bhūmau dattena piṇḍena tṛptā yāntu parāṃ gatim //

athācānteṣu punarapo datvā'svaditam'iti pitrādyarthān vācayati,'rocayate'iti viśvedevārthān /
tato yathāśakti dakṣiṇāṃ datvātha sarvebhyo'nnaseṣebhyaḥ piṇḍārtha prāśanārtha codghṛtya (annaśeṣaiḥ) annaśeṣaḥ kiṃ kriyatām'?iti śeṣaṃ nivedayet /
te ca'iṣṭaissaha bhujyatāṃ'iti pratibrūyuḥ /

dātāro no'bhivardhantāṃ vedāssantatireva naḥ /

atha yajñopavītī bhuktavato'nuvrajya pradakṣiṇīkṛtya, prācīnāvītī'dvaidhaṃ dakṣiṇāgrān'ityādi,'śeṣasya grāsavarārdhya prāśnīyāt'ityevamantaṃ yathāsūtraṃ karoti //


atra cedaṃ vaktavyam -brāhmaṇabhojanaṃ homaḥ piṇḍadānaṃ ca trīṇyapi māsiśrāddhe pradhānāni /
agnyādheye (ṅa ja-bhāṣyakereṇetyādhikam) /


dhūryasvāminoktatvāt , vaiśvadeve viśvedevā ityatra kapardisvāminīktatvācca /

kecit -iha brāhmaṇabhojanameva pradhānam, hemaḥ piṇḍadānaṃ ca tadaṅgam, anarthāvekṣo bhojayediti prakṛtya tayorvidhānāt iti /

athāsya mukhyakalpāsambhave āmaśrāddhavidhiranukalpatayocyate--

āpadyanagnau tīrthe ca candrasūryagrahe tathā /

āmaśrāddhaṃ dvijaiḥ kārya śūdraḥ kuryātsadaiva hi //

ja-vṛhaspatipracetasorvacanāt,) vṛhatpracetovacanāt /
atra vyāsaḥ--

āvāhanaṃ ca kartavyamardhyadānaṃ tathaiva ca /
eṣa eva vidhiryatra (ḍa-anna. cha-āma) yatra śrāddhaṃ vidīyate //


yadyaddadāti viprabhyaḥ śṛtaṃ yadi vāśṛtam /

tenāgnau karaṇaṃ kuryātpiṇḍāṃstenaiva nirvapet //
iti /
atra ṣaṭtriṃśanmatamāmaśrāddhaṃ yadā kūryāt piṇḍadānaṃ kathaṃ bhavet /

gṛhādāhṛtya pakvānnaṃ piṇḍān jadyāttilaissaha //
iti /

prayogasaṃkṣepastu-pūrvedyuraparedyurvā brāhmaṇānnimantrya, pūrvāhṇe snātvā brāhmaṇānāhūya, pādaprakṣālanādyarghyadānāntaṃ kṛtvā, yathāvibhavaṃ gandhavastrādibhiśca yathārhamabhyarcya,'agnau kariṣyāmī'tyāmantrya āthāgnimukhānte taṇḍulādyamadravyeṇa homakaraṇam /
tatastantraśeṣaṃ samāpya, taṇḍulādyāmadravyaṃ śrāddhārtha dadāti /
carorabhāvāttaddharmāṇāmabhāvaḥ /
bhojanābhāvācca tatsambandhināmabyaṇāvaḥ /
tataḥ piṇḍadānamāmena, gṛhādāhṛtena pakkena veti /

atyantāpadi tu'api ha hiraṇyena pradānamātraṃ', api ha hiraṇyena (kha.ga--ṅa-pradhānamātraṃ evamuttaratrāpi) /
pradānamātraṃ api mūlaphalaiḥ pradānamātram, ityādibodhāyanādivacanāddhiraṇyādervā pradānamātraṃ samastadharmarahitaṃ kuryāt /
evaṃ sarvathāpi śrāddhamavaśyaṃ kartavyam /
na tu kasyāṃcidapyavasthāyāṃ lopaḥ /
atra ca śrāddhaviṣaye yadyapi, vasavaḥ pitaro jñeyāḥ rudrāścaiva pitāmahāḥ /
prapitāmahāstadityāśśrutireṣā samātanī //


ityādiśāstrāntarasiddhaṃ bahu vaktavyamasti;tathāpi vistarabhayāduparamyate //9//


evaṃ prakṛtibhūtaṃ māsiśrāddhaṃ vyākhyāyedānīṃ tadvikṛtibhūtaṃ pratisaṃvatsaramanuṣṭheyaṃ aṣṭakākhyaṃ pākayajñāntaraṃ vyākhyāsyan, tasya kālavidhimāha--
