The Sanskrit edition of the Apastamba Grihya-sutra with the commentaries of Haradatta (called the Anakula-vritti) and Sudarshana (called the Grihyatatparyadarshana-vyakhya). The Apastamba Grihyasutra is a short treatise on Vedic rituals which, together with the Hiranyakeshin-grihya-sutra, belongs to the Taittiriya School of the Black Yajur-Veda. dvividhamupākaraṇam-kāṇḍopakaraṇamadhyāyopākaraṇañceti /
tathā samāpanam /
tathā cānyapare vākye darśanaṃ"kāṇḍopākaraṇe cāmātṛkasya kāṇḍasamāpane cāpitṛkasye"ti (āpa.dha.1-11-1-2) adhyāyopākaraṇaṃ tu prasiddhaṃ-śrāvaṇyāṃ paurṇamāsyāmadhyāyamupākṛtyeti /

tathā samāpanaṃ taiṣyāṃ paurṇamāsyāṃ rohiṇyāṃ viramet,iti /

ārdhvayavaṃ grahāḥ dākṣiṇāni samiṣṭayajūṃṣyavabhṛthayajūṃṣi vājapeyaśśukriyāṇi savā iti sabrāhmaṇāni sānubrāhmaṇāni saumyāni /
agnyādheyaṃ punarādheyaṃ agnihotramagnupasthānamagnicayanaṃ sāvitra nāciketacāturhotriyavaiśvasṛjāruṇā iti sabrāhmaṇāni sānubrāhmamānyāgyeyāni /
rājasūyaḥ paśubandhaḥ iṣṭayo nakṣatreṣṭayo divaśyenayo'pāghāḥ satrāyaṇamupahemāḥ sūktānyupānuvākyaṃ yājyā aśvamedhaḥ puruṣamedhassautrāmaṇyacchidrāṇi paśuhautramupaniṣada iti sabrāhmaṇāni sānubrāhmaṇāni vaiśvadevānīti (bau.gṛ.3-1-21-24) asmākañca gṛhyamantrapraśnadvayamapyekāgnikāṇḍaṃ nāma vaiśvadevakāṇḍe draṣṭavyam /

tatassadasaspatimadbhutamiti mantreṇa kramaprāptena sahitamantrasvādhyāmārtha vivāhaprakaraṇe paṭhita- /
tasyaiva viniyogapradarśanārtha idaṃ sūtramasmin pradeśe pachitam /
anyathopanayanānantarameva vaktavyaṃ syāt /

evaṃ tasya tasya samāpane tasmai tasmai kāṇḍarṣaye homaḥ /
sadasaspataye dvitīyaḥ /
na jayādayaḥ, prāpakābhāvāt /
sūtrāntarāśrayaṇena kecijjuhvati /

pūrvavaddhāraṇādhyayanamaṅgādhyayanaṃ ca punarupākaraṇamityādi /
ādyakalpe tu kecidutsarjanaṃ na kurvate /
opākaraṇādadhītya punarupākurvate /
anye tūtsṛjya punaradhīyate /
vedavratāni ca yadā kadācit kurvate /
teṣāṃ mūlaṃ mṛgyam /
sarveṣvapi pakṣeṣu śukriyāṇāṃ pṛthagupākaraṇamutsarjanañca /

tatra prayogaḥ-parvaṇyudayagayana ityārabhyājyabhāgante somāya kāṇḍarṣaye svāheti sadasaspatimiti ca hutvā jayādipariṣcanānte madantīrupaspṛśyetyevamādi pratipadyate /
evameva pūrvavat visṛjyetyatrāpi prayegaḥ //1//

atra viṣayaśudhyarthamadhyāyasya ca prājāpatyasaumyāgneyavaiśvadevākhyānāṃ kāṇḍānāṃ ca tattatkāṇḍākhyavratānāṃ copākaraṇa samāpa- nayośca svarūpamucyate-tatrādhyāyasyopākaraṇaṃ, śrāvaṇyāṃ paurṇamāsyāṃ vihitahomapūrvaka madhyāyānāmārambhaḥ /
samāpanaṃ ca, tasya taiṣyāṃ paurṇamāsyāmityādiṣu homapūrvakamevādhyayanotsargaḥ /
kāṇḍānāmupākaraṇaṃ tukramaprāpte kāle homapūrvakameva tattatkāṇḍānāmadhyayanopakramaḥ /

samāpanaṃ caiṣāṃ tattatkāṇḍādhyayane samāpte homapūrvakamevotsargaḥ /
ye ete kāṇḍānāmupākaraṇasamāpane te eva vratānāmiti, na bhedoma, adhyayanāṅgatvāt sarveṣāṃ brahmacārivratānām /
sārasvatapāṭhādhyayane tu kāṇḍānāṃ saṅkīrṇatvena yathākāṇḍamadhyayanāsambhavāt, vratānyevodagayane kāṇḍavadekaikaśaḥ upākṛtya saṃvatsaraṃ caritvā vidhivadutsṛjet /
catvāryeva ca vedavratāni, na tu gṛhyāntarokte sāvitrasammitākhye vedavrate, savitrasammitākhyakāṇḍayorabhāvāt /
'caulopanayanaṃ, catvāri vedavratāni, (gau.dha.8-15) iti gautama vacanācca //


tathā viṣayaśudhyarthameva prayogabhāṣyamalpabhedameva likhyate /
āpastambadarśanānugatepadeśenādhyāyopākaraṇādīnāṃ karmocyate /
tatra tāvadadhyāyopākaraṇasya śrāvaṇyāṃ paurṇamāsyāṃ ācāryaśśiṣyaissaha kṛtaprāṇāyāmo'dhyāyamupākariṣya'iti saṅkalpya mahānadyāṃ vidhivat snātvā pavitrapāṇiḥ nava ṛṣīn tarpayet-'prajāpatiṃ kāṇḍaṛṣiṃ tarpayāmi /
somaṃ kāṇḍaṛṣiṃ tarpayāmi /
agniṃ kāṇḍaṛṣiṃ tarpayāmi /
viśvāndevān kāṇḍaṛṣiṃ tarpayāmi /
sāṃhitīrdevatā upaniṣadastarpayāmi /
yājñikīrdevatā upaniṣadastarpayāmi /
vāruṇīrdevatā upaniṣadastarpayāmi /
brahmāṇaṃ svayaṃbhuvaṃ tarpayāmi /
sadasaspatiṃ tarpayāmi-iti /
tato'gnerupasamādānādyagnimukhānte anvārabdheṣvantevāsiṣu navājyāhutīrjuhoti'prajāpataye kāṇḍaṛṣaye svāhā /
somāya kāṇḍaṛṣaye svāhā /
agnaye kāṇḍaṛṣaye svāhā /
viśvebhyo devebhyaḥ kāṇḍaṛṣibhyaḥ svāhā /
sāṃhitībhyo devatābhya upaniṣadbhyaḥ svāhā /
yājñikībhyo devatābhya upaniṣadbhyaḥ svāhā /
vāruṇībhyo devatābhya upaniṣadbhyassvāhā /
brahmaṇe svayaṃbhuve svāhā'; /
sadasaspatimityetayarcā navamīmādutiṃ juhoti /
tata ācāryapramukhāḥ darbhevāsīnā darbhān dhārayamāṇā vedasyāditaścaturo'varārdhyānanuvākānadhīyīran /
atha jayādi pariṣecanānte brāhmaṇatarpaṇam /
evamevotsarge, na tato'dhikaṃsmṛtyantaropasaṃhāreṇāpi,kintu yathāpastambīyaṃ sūtram /
tathā nādito vedasyānuvākānāmadhyayanam /
jayādayastu bhavanti /
saumyādṛte kāṇḍopākaraṇasamāpanayośca na sūktopahomadevatopasthānajayādayaḥ /
saumyasyaiva sūktajayādayaḥ /
evamāpastambamata evāvasthitāḥ kecit kurvate yathoktam //


atha prājāpatye vrate pūrvavat snātvā somāgniviśvedevavarjyānāṃ tarpaṇam /
agnimukhānte cānvārabdhe vratini juhoti-prajāpataye kāṇḍaṛṣaye svāhā /
'prajāpate na tvadetānyanyaḥ'(tai.brā.2-8-1-2) iti sūktena pratyṛcaṃ ṣaḍāhutīḥ, catasra upahomāhutīḥ sāṃhitībhya ityādibhireva, sadasaspatimityetayaiva sadasaspatiṃ ca /
'agne vratapate kāṇḍaṛṣibhyaḥ prājāpatyaṃ vrataṃ cariṣyāmi, tacchakeyaṃ tanme rādhyatām /
cāyo vratapate, āditya vratapate, vratānāṃ vratapate kāṇḍaṛṣibhyaḥ, prājāpatyaṃ vrataṃ cariṣyāmi tacchakeyaṃ tanme rādhyatām ,'; /

(tai.ā.7-41-3) ityetaiścaturbhiḥ yathādevatam /
tato jayādi, brāhmaṇatarpaṇaṃ ca /
evameva samāpane prayogaḥ saṃvatsare saṃvatsare paryavete /

tatropasthānamantreṣu acāriṣamaśakamarādhīti viśeṣaḥ /
kecit-saumye keśaśmaśruvāpanasya dṛṣṭatvāt prājāpatyādiṣvapīcchanti //


evamevāgneye vāśvadeve ca /
agnaye kāṇḍaṛṣaye svāhā;'agne naye'(tai.brā.2-8-2)tiṣaḍṛcaṃ sūktam,;'agne vratapate kāṇḍaṛṣibyaḥ āgneyaṃ vrataṃ cariṣyāmī'tyāgneye viśeṣaḥ /
viśvebhyo devebhyaḥ kāṇḍaṛṣibhyaḥ svāhā;'ā no viśve askrāgamantu'(tai.brā.2-8-6-3) iti ṣaḍṛcaṃ sūktam /
vaiśavadevaṃ vrataṃ cariṣyāmī'ti vaiśvadevavrate viśṣaḥ //


somasya kāṇḍopākaraṇasamāpane śukriyakalpokte /
atrāpyuktaṃ yattaducyate pūrvavadupākṛtyāgnerupasamādhānādyagnimukhānte, somāya kāṇeḍaṛṣaye svāhā /
'somo dhenu'(tai.brā.2-8-3-1) miti ṣaḍṛcaṃ sūktam /
upahomān sadasaspatiṃ ca hutvā, evaṃ purvavadupākṛtya, madantīmupaspṛśya prathamenānuvākena śāntiṃ kṛtvā catasna audumbarīssamidho ghṛtānvaktā abhyādadhāti'pṛthivī samit'(tai.ā.7-42-1) ityādibhiḥ /
atha devatopasthānam'agne vratapate kāṇḍaṛṣibhyaḥ saubyaṃ vrataṃ cariṣyāmi'ityādibhiḥ /
tataḥ prabhṛti śukriyamantrabrāhmaṇānuvākānāṃ prathamapadāni yuñjate'(tai.ā.7-2)'savitā'(tai.ā.8-12) iti vābhivyāhārya vācayitvā jayādi prati padyate /
pariṣecanāntaṃ kṛtvā madantīmupaspṛsya, uttamenānuvākena śāntiṃ kṛtvā tatassammīlanādi yathāśūtram /
śvobhūte'vayaḥ suparṇāḥ (tai.ā.7-42-3) ityādityopasthānānte brāhmaṇabhojanam /
athāsya svādhyāyavidhiḥ śukriyakalpa evoktaḥ /
evaṃ samāpane /
viśeṣastu'dyaussamidāditya vratapate'ityādyāvṛttāḥ samidādhānopasthānamantrāḥ /
uttamenānuvākena śāntiṃ kṛtvā gurave varaṃ datvā keśaśmaśru vāpayitvā brāhmaṇabhojanam /

atha sūtramākṣipyate- nanu-'upākaraṇe samāpane ca ṛṣiryaḥ prajñāyate'iti yaḥ prajāpatyādīnāmanyatamaḥ kāṇḍānukramaṇyāṃ kāṇḍaṛṣitvena samāmnāyate sa ṛṣiḥ devateti vyarthamevedaṃ sūtram /

kāṇḍopakaraṇeṣvetān purastātsadasaspateḥ /
juhuyāt kāṇḍasamāptau ca śrutireṣā sanātanī //

iti kāṇḍānukramaṇyāṃ kāṇḍarṣidevatātvasya siddhatvāt /
satyam, ata eva prajāpatyādayaścatvāraḥ pradhānahomadevatāḥ; sāṃhityādayassvayambhuparyantāścatvāra upahomadevatāḥ /
tenaite catvārassarvakāṇḍānāmupākaraṇasamāpanayoranuvartante pradhānānuvartitvādaṅgānāmityevaṃ paraṃ sūtram, na devatātvavidhiparam //1//


nanu-sadasaspatiradhyāyopākaraṇasamāpanayernavamaḥ /
kāṇḍepakāraṇasamāpanayeṣṣaṣṭhaḥ /
evamayamadvitīyo'pi kimartha dvitīya ityucyate? /

dvatīyasya sviṣṭakṛtaḥ sthāne'yaṃ sadasaspatirbhavedityevamartham /
idamarthameva ca pūrvatra'agnistiṣṭakṛddvitīyaḥ'(āpa.gṛ.7-7) ityuktam /

upākaraṇasamāpanayorājyahaviṣkayoḥ sviṣṭakṛdeva nāsti, kathaṃ tatsthāne sadasaspatividhiḥ?iticetanenaiva vacanenāsya prasaṅgo vidhīyate, yathā agnihotre dvitīyasyā āhuteśśātapathena brāhmaṇena /
tenāgneruttarārdhapūrvārdhe'smai homaḥ /

etadvismaraṇe sviṣṭakṛllopaprāyaścittaṃ ca /
homo liṅgakramābhyāṃ'sadasaspatimadbhutam'ityetayā hotavya iti spaṣṭatvāt sūtrakārasyānādaraḥ kecit--'upākaraṇe samāpane ca yaḥ kāṇḍaṛṣiḥ prajñāyate tasya dvitīyassadasaspatiḥ /
kāṇḍaṛṣeruparuṣṭādayaṃ mantrassadasaspatirviniyujyate, na tu vivāhe, uddīpyasveti ṛgdvayamiva /
vivāhamadhye pāṭhastvadhyayanavidhyarthaḥ'ityevaṃ sadasaspatimantrasya viṣayajñāpana- vyājena etayoḥ karmaṇoḥ prayogakalpasyānyatra prasiddhasyātrāprasiddhatvāt avaśyāśrayaṇīyasya iha śāstre'bhyantarībhāvo'sya sūtrasya prayojanam, tataśca kriyāpravṛttiriti /
tanna;sūtrasthasya sadasaspatiśabdasya mukhyārthadevatāparatvasambhave'pi mantrapratīkaṃ lakṣayitvā tena lakṣitena mantralakṣaṇāyā ayuktatvāt, uktavidhayānayorihaiva prayogasya prasiddhatvāt, anyatraprasiddhasyābhyantarībhāvavaimarthyācca //2//


'yasyāgnau na kriyate na tadbhoktavyam'(āpa.dha.2-15-13) iti dharmaśāstravacanāt śarīrasthityarthamapi bhojanaṃ dvijasya vaiśvadevaśeṣeṇaiva bhavitavyam /
catūrātramahūyamāno'gnirlaukikassampadyate'iti vacanādahute'gnihotre sarvakratvartho'gnirlaukikassyāt /
tataśca jvarādibhirupadrave satyapi vaiśvadevāgnihotrādeḥ tatprāyaścittānāṃ homānāmavaśyakāryatvādṛtvigantarālābhe satyapi dvayorapi stryanupetayoḥ yena kenacit prakāreṇa mantra aṅgalopenāpi tatra prasaktiḥ /
tathā vaiśvadevasya śrāddhādiṣu'atha gṛhamedhinoyadaśanīyasya homā balayaśca'; (āpa.dha.2-3-12) iti vacanāt, suvarcakā yavakṣārābhyāṃ lavaṇena cāvarānnena ca kośadhānyāparanāmnā māṣādinā tilavyatiriktena saṃsṛṣṭasyāpi bhavati haviṣo home prasaktiḥ /
tadubhayaniṣedhārthamāha-
44 vaiśvadeve niṣiddhaḥ kartā niṣiddhāni ca dravyāṇi /
