The Sanskrit edition of the Apastamba Grihya-sutra with the commentaries of Haradatta (called the Anakula-vritti) and Sudarshana (called the Grihyatatparyadarshana-vyakhya). The Apastamba Grihyasutra is a short treatise on Vedic rituals which, together with the Hiranyakeshin-grihya-sutra, belongs to the Taittiriya School of the Black Yajur-Veda. 'āryāḥ prayatā vaiśvadeva'iti codite vaiśvadevākhye karmaṇi devatopadeśo'yaṃ nirvāpakāle saṅkalpārtham /
yāstu tatra devatāḥ ṣaḍbhirādyaiḥ pratimantraṃ (apā.dha-2-3-16) ityevamādyāḥ tāḥ pradānakāle devatāḥ, tena viśvebhyo devebhyaḥ iti saṅkalpya gṛhasthena svagṛhe pākaḥ kāryaḥ /
tathā pakvādevānnāt homā balayaśca tasyai tasyai devatāyai /
'aharaharbhūtabīla'rityevamādyāḥ pañcamahāyajñānāmutpattividhayaḥ /
'āryāḥ prayatā'ityādikastu teṣāmeva prayogavidhiḥ /
tasmāt na pṛthak pañcamahāyajñāḥ kartavyāḥ tatraiva vaiśvadevam yadagnau kriyate sa devayajñaḥ /
yat baliharaṇaṃ sa bhūtayajñaḥ /
yaddakṣiṇataḥ pitṛliṅgeneti sa pitṛyajñaḥ /
yadagraṃ ca deyamityādi sa manuṣyayajñaḥ /
tatra vaiśvadeve somāya svāheti dvitīyāhutiriti mantravyākhyākāreṇoktam /
na ca ṣaḍebhirādyairiti virodhaḥ /
tasya pradhānadevatāviṣayatvāt, sviṣṭakṛtaśca tāntrikatvāt /

atha kasmādihaiva vaiśvadevasya kṛtsnakalpo nopadiśyate?ucyate-ihopadeśe tasya kalpasya sarvacaraṇārthatā na syāt, iṣyate ca /
tasmāt sarvacaraṇasādhāraṇeṣu sāmayācārikeṣūpadeśaḥ /
atha taṃhi devatopadeśaḥ tatraiva kasmānna kṛtaḥ ?ihopadeśaprayojanamasmin gṛhye tadapi vaiśvadevaṃ karmopadiṣṭaṃ yathā syāditi /
tenāsmadīyānāṃ sa eva vaiśvadevakalpo nānyeṣu dharmaśāstreṣu coditaḥ /
yajñopavītinā pradakṣiṇamityādi paribhāṣāpravṛttiśca bhavati //29//

Sudarśana’s Gṛhyatātparyadarśana-vyākhyā (sūtra 7.27)

vaiśvadevamiti karmanāmadheyam /
pravṛttinimittaṃ ca, viśve sarve devā atrejyanta iti /
iha ca mantravarṇasiddhānāṃ devatātvasyāvidheyatvāt, āgneyādayaṣṣaḍapi homāḥ baliharaṇāni cānagnideśyānyapi sarvāṇyeva pradhānāni;na tu kiñcidapi śeṣāparanāmāṅgam, ityevaṃ sūtrārthaḥ /

ayaṃ bhāvaḥ-yādinānagnau pradhānam, kintu śeṣa eveti tarhye taccheṣalakṣaṇe tṛtīyādhyāye dṛśyeta /
na tu dṛṣṭam, nāpi sūtrakārektaṃ dṛśyate /

kintu puṇḍapitṛyajñe tāvadāpastambena hemaḥ piṇḍadānaṃ cobhayaṃ pradhānamuktam, piṇḍadānaṃ prakṛtyaryadi jīvapitā, na dadyāt, āhomātkṛtvā viramet'(āpa.śrau.1-9-8) iti /
yadi hi piṇḍadānasyāṅgatā, tadā pradhānabhūtahomānuṣṭhāne sati, tasyāpyanuṣṭhānaṃ syāt, na virāmaḥ /
tasmādatra pradhānasyaiva piṇḍadānasya'nāsomayājī sammayet'(tai.saṃ.2-5-5) ityādivadanārabhbhalakṣaṇa eva virāmaḥ /

kātyāyanastu-pratyuta pakṣe piṇḍadānameva pradhānaṃ, homastadaṅgamityāha'jīvapitṛkasya homāntam, anārambho '(kā.śrau.4-1-24,25) iti //

tathā sarpeśānabalyorapi homā balayaśca pradhānam /
avabhṛthe tvanagnāveva pradhānam /
somāṅgatve'pyasya pradhānyaṃ svāṅgāpekṣayā /
tathaiva rākṣase gardabhapaśau anagnāveva pradhānam ;'apyasvavadānaiścareyuḥ'(āpa.śrau.9-15-3) iti vacanāt /
vapāyāstūpadeśamatādagnau homaḥ /
'yadi vapā haviravadānaṃ skandet'(āpa.śrau.9-18-15) iti vapāyāḥ pṛthaggrahaṇāt /
evamanagnāvapyanyāni bahūni pradhānam;'aupāsane pacane ṣaḍbhirādyaiḥ pratimantraṃ hastena juhuyāt'(āpa.dha.2-3-17) iti parisaṅkhyayā cāsya vaiśvadevasyāpārvaṇā- vikāratvāt /
sarpabalyādiṣu tu pārvaṇavikāratvāttāvadaṅgam /

kiñca vaiśvadevamantreṣvapi'agnaye svāhā, agnaye sviṣṭakṛte svāhā'ityetayorapyāmnānāt prādhānyam /

nanu-vaiśvadevamantrāṇāmapi na pratyakṣassamāmnāyaḥ, sa kathamavagamyate?icyate-'ṣaḍbhirādyaiḥ pratimantram''apareṇāgniṃ saptamāṣṭamābhyām'; (āpa.dha.2-3-16,20) ityādisūtraiḥ krameṇa viniyogāt kvacidāmnānamastītyavagamyate /
taccāmnānaṃ prāgvivāhamantrebhyaḥ, bhāṣyakāra vacanāt /

tataśca brahmayajñapārāyaṇayorapyeteṣāmevaṃkrameṇādhyayanaṃ veditavyam /
sarvaprādhānye ca prayojanam-eṣāmekataramapyakṛtvā prayoge samāpite'pi tat prāgbhojanāt saprāyaścittaṃ sāṅgamanuṣṭheyam;kṛte tu bhojane pākayajñalopaprāyaścittameveti /

kecit-vaiśvadeve viśve devā devatā vidhīyante nirvāpakāle saṅkalpārtham, īśānayajñavat /
yāstu dharmaśāstre mantraviniyogāt kalpitāstāḥ pradānakāle devatāḥ /
iha ca devatopadeśo vaiśvadevasya gārhyaparibhāṣāprāptyarthaḥ /
tatra tasyopadeśastu sarvacaraṇārthaḥ /
idaṃ ca vaiśvadevaṃ na pañcamahāyajñebhyaḥ pṛthagbhūtam /
'aharaharbhūtabaliḥ'(āpa.dha.1-12-15) ityādayaśca pañcamahāyajñānāmutpattividhayaḥ /
'āryāḥ prayatā vaiśvadeve'; (āpa.dha.2-3-1) ityādistu prayogavidhiḥ /
tatra yadagnau kriyate sa devayajñaḥ, yat baliharaṇaṃ sa bhūtayajñaḥ, yaddākṣiṇataḥ pitṛliṅgeneti sa pitṛyajñaḥ, yaccāgradānaṃ sa manuṣyayajñaḥ, iti /

tanna, svamate śrutyā coditān viśvān devān vacanaṃ vināpanīya, tebhyassaṅkalpitasya haviṣo devatāntarebhyo mantravarṇāt kalpitebhyo dātumayuktatvāt /
īśānabalau tu bhavaśarvādiśabdānāmīśānābhidhānatvāt, arthasya devatātvamiti sūtrakāramatācca, yuktaṃ bhavāyetyādibhirmantrairdānam /
yattu mīḍhuṣyai jayantāya cāsmāt sthālīpākāddānaṃ tadapyabhyudayeṣṭyādivat savanīyapuroḍāśavacca'trīnodanān kalpayitvottarairupasparśayitvottarairyathāsvamodanebhyo hutvā'(āpa.gṛ.20-4) iti vacanaiḥ sthālīpākāṃśadvaye pūrvadevatāpanayena devatāntara vidhānādyuktam /
pañcamahāyajñebhyo na pṛthagvaiśvadevamityapi na;prakaraṇāntarāt saṃjñābhedācca karmabhedāvagateḥ /
naca karmabhede teṣāṃ prayogo durupapāda iti pramitabhedāpahnavo yuktaḥ, yato bhāṣye vaiśvadevasya teṣāṃ ca prayogaḥ pṛthagevopapāditaḥ //


atha prayogabhāṣyamīṣadbhedaṃ sikhyate-vaiśvadevasya karmocyate'prasaṅgāt pañcamahāyajñānāṃ ca /
samāveśanajapānte vivāhe samāpte
vaiśvadevamantraṇāmupayoge yadvrataṃ'dvādaśāhamadhaśśayyā'(āpa.dha.2-3-13) ityādi tatsvāmitvāviśeṣāt sapatnīkaścaritvā praśaste'- hanyārabhya'āryāḥ prayatā vaiśvadeve'nnasaṃskartārassyuḥ'ityādividhinā siddhe'nne tiṣṭhannannasaṃskartā bhāryādiḥ'bhūtam'iti svāmine prabrūyāt /
tat'subhūtaṃ sāvirāḍannaṃ tanmākṣāyi'iti svāmī pratibrūyāt /
tato yadi prayāṇe gṛhevā vaiśvadevasya homasya sthāne'gnirupasamādhātavyaḥ, tatra dharmasāstroktavidhinā upasamādadhāti /
evamanyatrāpyaupāsanahomādiṣu /
atha gṛhamedhino yadaśanīyamannaṃ tato homārtha haviṣyamannaṃ pātre kalpayati /

ahaviṣyaṃ śrāralavaṇāvarānnasaṃsṛṣṭaṃ dvitīye /
haviṣyamannaṃ devayajñārtha tṛtīye /
sarvatassamavadāya agrārtha caturthe /
sarvata eva samavadāya manuṣyayajñārya pañcame yadi brāhmaṇatarpaṇaṃ nāvakalpate /
'manuṣyebhyo yathāśakti dānam'; (āpa.dha.1-12-15) iti vacanāt /
tataḥ pariṣecanaṃ kṛtvā prathamakalpitādannādyathāhutimātraṃ aṅguṣṭhaparvamātraṃ'agnaye svāhe'tyādibhiḥ ṣaḍaihutīrhutvā uttaraṃ pariṣecanam /
atha udīcīnamuṣṇaṃ bhasmāpohya tasmin ahaviṣyaṃ svāhākāreṇa juhoti;'yasyāgnau na kriyate yasyacāgraṃ na dāyate na tadbhoktavyam (āpa.dha.2-15-13) iti vacanāt /
atha ṣaḍāhutihomaśeṣamahaviṣyahomaśeṣeṇa saṃsṛjyānnena sūpa saṃsṛṣṭena dharmaśāstroktena vidhinā raudrāntaṃ baliṃ hṛtvāgraṃ brāhmaṇāya datvā, brāhmaṇoktatvā dapārvaṇa vyākhyātaṃ sannipātītikartavyatākaṃ devayajñaṃ kurvīta /
devayajñena yakṣya ityāgūrya, vidyudasi /
aupāsane pacane kalpitādannāt, tadabhāve haviṣyamannaṃ vrīhiyavādi, ākāṣṭhāt, devebhyassvāheti hastena juhuyāte;sannipātītikartavyatayoraupāsanahomavaiśvadevayorhastena homasya dṛṣṭatvāt /
mantravaccobhayataḥ pariṣecanam, tayordṛṣṭatvādeva /
vṛṣṭirasi /
vaṣaṭkārahomeṣu vidyudvṛṣṭī ityupadeśaḥ /

atha prācīnāvītī pitṛyajñena yakṣye ityuktvā vidyudāsi /
śucaubhūmau kalpitādodanāt hastena aṅguṣṭhapradeśinyāvantareṇa pitṛbhyaḥ svadhāstu, iti dadyāt āhutimātram /
vṛṣṭirasi /
pitryaṃ baliharaṇavidhinetyupadeśaḥ /

atha baliharaṇasya homatulyatvāt yajñopavītī bhūtayajñena yakṣya ityuktvā, vudyut /
śucau bhūmāveva hastena'idaṃ bhūtebhyo'stu'iti dadyāt /

baliharaṇavidhinetyupadeśaḥ /

atha dānasya homatulyatvāt yajñopavītī manuṣyayajñena yakṣya ityuktvā, vidhyuta /
brāhmaṇatarpaṇaṃ, saṅkalpitasya dānam /
vṛṣṭiḥ
dānamājñamityupadeśaḥ /
brahmayajñaṃ tu pūrvameva kurvīta agnihotramaupāsanaṃ hutvā;'utita āditye'(tai.ā.2-11) iti vacananāt /
tasya karmocyate-'brahmayajñena yakṣyamāṇaḥ'(tai.ā.2-11) ityādi brāhmaṇoktadeśe yathāvidhyācāmet /
asmiṃstvācamane viśeṣaḥ-'dakṣiṇata upavīya'ityārabhya'sakṛdupaspṛśya'(tai.ā.2-11) ityevamante viguṇe kṛte'yadi yajuṣṭa'iti'bhuvasvāhā'iti homaḥ prāyaścittm /

'dākṣiṇena pāṇinā savyaṃ prokṣya'ityārabhya śeṣe viguṇe kṛte'yadyavijñātā'iti prāyaścittam /

atha krama ucyate- brahmayajñena yakṣye ityuktvā, vidyuta /
ācamanam /
āsanakalpanādi sāvitrījapāntaṃ kṛtvā vedasyādita ārabhya yathādhyāyamadhyayanamadhyāyaḥ kṛtsnasya vedasyāsamāpteḥ;'śrāvaṇyāṃ paurṇamāsyāmadhyāyamupākṛtya'(āpa.dha.1-9-1) iti vacanāt yena prakāreṇādhyāyo yena ca krameṇā dhīryate'vinā cāmnānaiḥ ādipradiśṭānuṣaṅgaprakhyādibhiḥ, utsṛjan utsṛjyotsṛjya, vācā manasā ca yāvattarasaṃ yāvacchakyamadhīyīta /
paridhānīyāṃ kṛtvā, vṛṣṭirasi /
evamaharahaḥ kṛtāntādārabhya yāvatsamāpto vedaḥ sahaikāgni vidhikāṇḍena /
samastamadhītya vaiśvadeva mantrānadhītya tataḥ prasugmanteti praśnadvayadhīyīta /
evaṃ viniyogadarśanāt,'aikāgniko vidhiḥ kāṇḍaṃ vaiśvadevamiti sthitiḥ, //


iti vacanācca /
yadyanekaśākhādhyāyī tato'nenaiva vidhinā dvitīyaṃ punaradhīyīta ṛgyajussāmnāṃ krameṇa adhyayane yadyanadhyāyassyāt, tadaikāṃ varcamekaṃ yajurekaṃ sāma kṛtāṃtādevārabhyābhivyāharet /
yadā brāhmaṇasya krameṇa tadā'bhūrbhuvassuvassatyaṃ tapaśśraddhāyāṃ juhomī'tyabhivyāharet /
evaṃ yāvajjīvaṃ brahmayajñaṃ kurvīta /
manuṣyayajñānte'sarvān vaiśvadevebhāginaḥ kurvīta, (āpa.dha.2-9-5) ityādividhānena sarveṣu patnyanteṣu bhuktvatsu, pākapariveṣaṇapātrebhyo lepān saṅkṛṣyottarataḥ śucau deśe rudrāya sampadānabhūtāya ninayet,'rudrāyasvāhā'iti /

nityavaccaninayanam;pratipattikarmatvāt /
'evaṃ vāstu śivaṃ bhavati'(āpa.dha.2-4-23) ityarthavādaḥ /
'dravyasaṃskārakarmasu parārthatvāt'; (pū.mī.4-3-1) iti nyāyāt /
phalaṃ , sūtrakāreṇopadiṣṭatvāt'yaetānavyagro yathopadeśaṃ kurute nityaḥ svargaḥ puṣṭiśca'(āpa.dha.2-4-9)

evamṛte mahāyatrebhyaḥ sāyaṃ raudrāntaṃ kṛtvā vaihāyasamākāśe bhūtabaliṃ kurvīta //


anya āhuḥ-'naktamevottamena'(āpa.2-4-8) ityevakārasya vyavahitānvayādvaihāyasameva sāyamiti //


idānīṃ prasaṅgāt sarpavalestadutsargasya ca devatāmupadiśati-
