Daksinamurti is the form of Siva in a meditative posture. The main right and left hands are holding Abhaya and Varada Mudras. His Varada hand is holding a Pustaka.
The other two hands are not clear since the idol is not well maintained. But according to the Gurukkal, the back right hand is holding Udukkai or drum and the back left hand is holding Agni or fire.The cloth draped around is hiding much of his body and his eyes are in a meditative pose.

Kumbakonam is considered as one of the holiest places in Tamil Nadu and is known for its temples and Mathas (monasteries which were centres of Brahmanical learning). These photographs depict the connection between the sculptures in the temples and Natya Shastra and related texts dealing with iconography.
