Image title: Figure 84. Samabhanga
The second figure is in Samabhanga, right hand is in Suci and left hand is in Uru Hasta. Seem to be figures of Nayanmars. “The Nayanmars were Saivite saints from different background who were all united only by their immense devotion to Siva. They ranged from kings, soldiers, farmers to common man. The foremost amongst the Nayanmars were Appar, Sundarar, Tirujnana Sambandar and Manikkavacakar.”
Kumbakonam is considered as one of the holiest places in Tamil Nadu and is known for its temples and Mathas (monasteries which were centres of Brahmanical learning). These photographs depict the connection between the sculptures in the temples and Natya Shastra and related texts dealing with iconography.
